AM1 is kind of a wierd platform. It's sort of budget, sort of slow, but not budget enough to really sell in the 1st-world.

This combo + rebate deal makes it a lot more palatable. I built some AM1 rigs a few months ago with Sempron 3850 1.3Ghz quad-core AM1 APUs, they are kind of slow running single-threaded apps like Firefox. For media decoding, they're alright.

The 5350 APU in this deal runs at 2.05Ghz (20.5 multi), and my understanding is that you can run them at up to 21 multi in the appropriate mobo, plus do a BCLK OC of around 5%.

I know that my laptop with an A6-6310 APU (quad-core small-core 1.8Ghz) is not really slow, it's reasonably snappy. It's one generation newer than the APU described in this deal, though.

Edit: For a case + PSU, may I suggest this one? I've built a few of these, they're decent:

Edit: I may have to un-recommend that case.

I left my AM1 Sempron 3850 rig, overclocked to 106 bus speed, on Windows Update (Win7), and went into the other room. The monitor went to sleep, and I figured it was just going to crunch away, until I got the list of available updates. I left my internet radio playing in my browser, along with a few tabs from this forum.

Well, came back a few hours later, PC didn't appear to be on. Clicked the mouse (ambiance lights were off), lights flashed and kind of flickered. Looked at PC, power LED was off, hit the power switch, and it booted, and there was a menu, "Start Windows Normally" was highlighted with a countdown timer. Obvious, it had failed to shut down or boot properly somehow.

So, not sure what happened.

I do remember, when I was sitting at it before, I started to smell a "warm electronics" smell. So I don't know if the PSU in this case is going already. It's barely used.

Edit: Hmm, I had "Sleep after 30 minutes" set in Power Options. I disabled that. But why didn't it wake from sleep when I clicked my mouse, and why wasn't the Power LED blinking to indicate it was in sleep mode? Sounds like the +5Vsb on the PSU may not be up to specs.

Thanks Op I am in for 2 if they don't have a limit. I kinda wish it was the Asus AM1I-A Mobo but this will do perfect for file servers!!

I have the 5350 with the ASRock AM1H in a HTPC and it has been great. Not sure I would want the MSI board. The MSI MB's show up on frys deals all the time. Sometimes its this exact same combo.

If you guys are on the frys.com emailing list, you can find these combos on sale regularly. Sometimes the ASUS AM1 is paired with the 5350.

@Virtual Larry...I drive past Directron here in Houston on a fairly regular basis. Is the power supply in that ITX case anywhere close to quiet?

Is there something deficient about the MSI board? Other than they don't add a third-party SATA controller chip for two more ports like some of the other boards do?

Anyways, I think that the PSU in that case is fairly silent, at least, last time I had one hooked up, I didn't notice any irritating noise from it.

Note that it does NOT have a chassis fan, so temps may be an issue with a more powerful rig. I think that any AM1 APU won't overheat though, they are quite low-power.

I just dont like MSI. Years ago when I built a lot of machines, MSI was questionable. Maybe they have improved their quality since then. I am more a fan of Gigabyte or ASUS.

I have both the Asrock and MSI boards (2 of the MSI). I have found that the MSI board quality isnt lacking what so ever from my experience.

However, Depending on use and requirements, the MSI does not have cutouts for wifi antennas or Optical audio and the Asrock does. Another plus is that the Asrock has the integrated power supply -- All i provided was the power brick and it really is a clean board.

On the plus side for the MSI board? Its cheeeeap.

I did have one 5350 chip die and is in the process of being RMA'ed

I am a bit surprised too. AMD and intel rarely have chips die these days. I have 2 5350's with The ASRock MB's, and I leave them at stock. One of them has some restarts every now and then. I am guessing its the PSU, but never spent the time to verify.

And yeah, its nice to have the DC in with that ASRock MB. Glad to hear MSI is doing better than before. I just remember a time when I felt they were not trust-able.

Interesting. CPUs don't normally just "die". Was it overclocked and/or over-volted?

Neither.

The graphics part is the part that died. I even replaced identical motherboards as I have two of the MSI's. I actually couldnt even use the pcie slot either. Everything else was replaced due to that very reason you mentioned... and... at the end of the day that is what it was, the cpu.
