I have a Dell D1025HTX 17" Trinitron monitor that has been working great up until a few minutes ago...I went to turn the computer on, but the screen wouldn't power up. Not only is it not displaying anything, but the power/standby lights are off! I changed power cords and outlets on the surge protector and it didn't help. When I put my ear close to it, I could hear some kind of noise. It was like a very tiny electrical click maybe once every second.

It's 7 years old, so there's no warranty. What should I do? I don't want to replace it. The image quality was great, and I want to fix it myself if possible.

Repairing a monitor yourself with no experience or training = bad idea. There's stuff in there that can kill you. Just buy a new one; 17" monitors are cheap.

7 years is a great life span. You got your moneys worth from that monitor. Start looking for a new one I am afraid. Taking it in for repair is not practical. It will cost you a minimum of 100 bucks and fixing it will be probably around 200.00 and then it being that old it will fail again shortly with some other component. Not cost feasible seeing you can buy a new one for less.

Actually, we've only had it for maybe 2 years. I bought it used.

I have a 15 year old monitor in the attic. It works fine. It's limited to 640x480 @ 60hz though

BTW, I opened it up last night to check for any obvious causes of death. Yes, I'm fully aware of the dangers. I found one fuse, but it was good. Other notes: Dang, there are some big capacitors and transformers in there!

None the less the monitor is still 7 yr old. CRT's capacitors dry out with hot environment and time. You fix 1 thing on a 7 yr monitor and something else is gona bite u on the butt. Its useless to try to repair a old crt.
