my friend dropped off his computer for me to fix the other day. he just got done putting it together and could not get it to work. i disassembled the whole thing, put it back together and it still has the same problem. today i called him and he admitted that he tried starting it without a heat sink. i dont have any am2s around to test it but is it likely that the cpu and/or mobo are dead. i havnt been keeping up on things recently but i remember the athlon xps would fry, but if you did it with a p4 it would survive. right now it will power up with no post or beep codes. also the cd-rom drives attached to the pata will not open unless disconnected from the motherboard.

system consists of
athlon 64 X2 5000+ black edition
asus m2n32-sli deluxe

have disconnected all unnecessary parts, tryed 2 other psu's, tested the video card im my computer, tryed other ram and different ram configurations, and reseated everything multiply times.

Only thing left is to try posting on a cardboard surface, such as a phonebook, with just one stick of memory, cpu/heatsink, and video. You can also download the asus manual for the board and check if the default bios settings include an auto shutdown for a specific temp. If it does, then chances are the problem is somewhere else. To get beep codes, the case speaker must be connected to the board.

This is Athlon 64 x2 5000+ Black Ed? Why oh why must he run the best AMD had to offer without heatsink fan? That's just crazy. There's high probability this CPU's fried; supposedly the high heat could fry the core within the first second. The only way to know for sure is to get a new mobo or new CPU to test. Based on the facts, there's far great probability that CPU is dead compared to motherboard problem.
