I told the guy that this wasn?t what I had bought, I meant to get the Pacific Digital burner, and he disappeared for a while and came back saying that the khypermedia one was indeed the one I ordered. I told him even if it is, it?s not what I wanted when I placed the order, and they are the same price, so why couldn?t I just exchange it. He disppared again for a while and then came back and said that they couldn?t sell me the Pacific Digital burner, because the other two offered are "replacements", and can only be sold once the khypermedia ones are out of stock. So I held in my ?wtf.. is that even legal, to sell me a product then give me a worse one instead of what I?ve already paid you for?? and just got my refund. Be warned.

damn. so thats why they claimed they were out of stock even after i called inventory with sku # before hand to verify the item is in stock. . these bitches said they were out of stock for the PD when i physically show up at the store at 5 locations. this happened in the san jose/milpitas area btw. so finally i said screw OM and bought the nec 2500a ($100) from newegg instead.. package arrived today, with black face plate no less. very happy with that purchase, dont even have to wait for the rebate anymore..:D

This deal worked great! Thanks.

Went into my local OfficeMax, no objection to the fact the Pacific Digital would be 109.99 with a 40 rebate. They even went into the back room to get me a 43 serial number (Lite-On 811s) vs. a P which was all they had up front. Then, they also happily applied a 25 off 100 coupon I had from Max Perks.

Bottom line, I got a Lite-On 811s burner for $45 before tax and after rebate!

Today was the last day of the sale. I called every OfficeMax, about 5, in my county. The only Pacific Digital 8x models they had left were either the BTC or the Lite-On's. I was looking for the NEC-2500. For $70 it would've been a great deal. I could've price-matched at Staples but it would've have been $10 more. I guess I'll just wait for the next time around.

The Nec 2500 would have been nice, but for $45 + tax, I'm VERY happy with a Lite-On 811s

That's a great price. I guess I can wait. I only got the DVD burning software I intend to use on Friday. I am a little bummed though. I'll have to check this forum, FW, and www.froogle.com more often now.

Wow, I just got an email response from Office Max informing me that my rebate has arrived. So, I checked out the web site just to make sure that everything is in order and sure enough my rebate is 'INVALID'. It says that I sent an incorrect UPC. Great.

Did anyone happen to get a Pacific Digital burner in this deal and keep a copy of the UPC? If so, could you please do me a favor and PM me the numbers? I may just go to OM today and get a copy of one from them if I have to.

I just checked my email and I got the same email response from Office Max. My rebate is INVALID due to INVALID UPC. I sent in the UPC from the Pacific Digital / Lite-On 8X. Looks like another rebate screw job by Office Max!!! Anyone get their rebate accepted on the Pacific Digital 8X DVD burner?

Long time lurker, first time poster....because I'm so pissd.

I just went into OM rebate area and saw that my rebate was deemed invalid too. It was totally legit. What a load of crap.

I didn't get the email yet, so I have no idea what to do. The rebate center oddly has no phone number.

Well, maxmyrebates.com (1-888-641-4109) is not doing well at entering the Pacific Digital rebates! Myself & 2 sons bought a total of 3, and carefully submitted the three rebates separately. Correct UPC, correct forms, all done right.

And:

One was entered as an I/O Magic DVD drive, so naturally the UPC was "Invalid".

Another was entered as (get this!) a Khypermedia 100-pack of CD-R's! So, naturally the UPC for that was invalid!

The third came back "Invalid UPC" also, but I don't know why.

A phone call from each of us fixed each problem, now they're all fixed, but this IS getting to be a PAIN!

The one about the Khypermedia CD-R's was a challenge to figure out.

Good luck!

I called maxmyrebates.com (1-888-641-4109) and hit '0' for someone. Then pretty much do not ask questions, or take blame, and approve the rebate if it was deemed invalid.

I was expecting more of a long drawn out war.

The war is with your patience as you now wait 8-12 weeks to get the rebate, even with it approved.

Mine hasn't shown up in their system yet.

I actually just called the number that was listed on Office Max's web site and they gave me the following # :

1-877-699-8797

I'm calling it now and will let you guys know if that is actually the number you need to call.

Well, that was easy. I just told the guy that it was showing invalid UPC and he offered to fix it. No questions or anything. I usually don't play the rebate game, but would this be considered a normal rebate company trick or do you guys think that maybe they made a legit mistake on these PD drives?

Having done hundreds of rebates, I think I can safely say:

"it's a normal rebate company trick."

Update 3/16/04: I called the Office Max Customer Service Center 888-641-4109 and spoke to a customer service rep (after a couple of failed attempts to navigate their confusing IVR system). Turns out the Pacific Digital UPC has two bar codes, a serial number (top of UPC) and a model number (bottom of UPC). They incorrectly used the serial number bar code instead of the model number bar code to process my rebate submission. The rep applied the correct bar code number and said I should receive my $50 rebate in 4 - 6 weeks. They must be having alot of trouble with Pacific Digital rebates because the very first choice you get from their automated voice response system is "are you calling about a Pacific Digital DVD RW rebate?". DO NOT SAY YES! This is for a rebate that was offered in August of last year and the rebate checks are just now being mailed! I pity those poor schmucks who are waiting on that rebate! They should train the monkeys that process their rebates better.

I checked the status of my $50 Office Max rebate again and it still showed invalid due to wrong UPC. I called again and complained that I thought this had been taken care of back on 3/16/04 when I called the first time. The Rep apologized and said they must have had a computer glitch and he would take care of it. Said the on-line status should change in the next few minutes, it did. They really are doing everything possible to NOT pay this rebate. I'm going to file complaints with the FTC and Better Business Bureau and I suggest that everyone else who got the run around on this rebate do the same. Let's make an example of this one! <B>
