Called 1-888-GO-DEPOT...Spoke with Ken (#D310)...PMed to Staples...added $25 off $75...in-store pickup...$91.43 out the door and $30 coming back in a few weeks...took all of 4 minutes to order...got fax confirmation before I hung up...can pick-up at 7PM tonite...good deal!

I just ordered it from Staples. after rebate and coupon it came out to $59.xx + tax and will be delivered to my door. Search the chubby wallet place for a $20 off of $100. Now I can use my 60gb 7200 ata133 2mb cache maxtor in my sons rig to back up ALL of my stuff on to and not worry about having to have an OS in it, just pure storage.

Just got back from OfficeDepot, I printed out the page where it says the $25 off coupon was accepted and wrote down the code. I could not order online for instore pick for some reason, even though I called the store and they had 3 in stock. SO I went to the store gave them the coupon code and they rang it up 108.53-25=89.38 with tax-30.00rebate=59.38 not a bad deal at all.

I got one from Fry's in San Jose at $78.24 after rebate (but incl. taxes). I bought another from Office Depot at $62.48 after rebates/coupons (but incl. taxes).

The box that I got from Fry's says:

Although I am getting 1-year warranty from the item purchased at OD and 3-year warranty from that purchased at Fry's, I'm keeping them both!

Could not get it online but called and after a few seconds of talking the person found it gave it to me for 108.53 after all is said and done including rebates and taxes. $58.53 and I am picking it up at the store, lol could not wait for delivery

can someone confirm plz... can i set up the 3yr warranty and this 1yr warranty drive in RAID. aren't they supposed to be identical drives? kit# is the same, and even shows the same on boot. thanks.

thanks, i know raid's possible. i suppose i'm just looking for some comments on experiences. does anyone have more information to share? my research suggests that the drives are identical -- just different batches, so there are slight cosmetic differences.

on a side note... wow! these drives get HOT! fast though.

Rec'd mine today from OD...ONE year warranty stated on the box
In fact all 8mb cache models are 1-yr warranty models.

The Office Depot webpage showing 3-yr warranty is incorrect. Their CS just verified that this info is wrong, they called Maxtor to confirm.
Your local OD(or staples) may have an older 2mb cache 80GB drive that does state a 3 yr warranty.
This is valid still if stated on box.
Maxtor no longer boxes any retail 3 yr warranty drives as of Oct 2002.

I bought a couple of these drives (one from OD and one from Staples) and I currently have them configured in RAID 1 (mirror) using a Highpoint 372 chipset (ata/100 RAID), they are both the same model # and work awesome together - the read speeds are insane.

FYI - you *can* RAID mis-matched drives. The one caveat is of course you get the lowest common denomenator (sic) for example, in RAID 1 - so if you had a 60GB and a 55GB drive, your drive would show up as a 55GB drive in your OS, and only 55GB of the 60GB drive would be used.

IDE RAID is pretty "ghetto", and therefore they have included many features which cater to folks like ourselves - on a real budget so we may have mis-matched drives and all kinds of funky things going on.

thanks for the feedback. that helps. i actually set up raid with 2 of these from fry's thanksgiving deal (red/gold box with woman). gets pretty damn hot. this one from OD is my 3rd. i'm setting up for a fourth to do 2x raid0.

also, i'd been wondering what would be faster 4x 20gb 2mb cache striped, or 2x 80gb 8mb cache striped. though i think my raid card (and most others) only allows me to stripe 1st and 2nd drives, 3rd and 4th allows only mirroring.

on a sidenote, maxtor features this FDB shizum. but i have definitely had quieter 7200s.

The 2 X 80GB 8MB would be faster, because yes...most IDE raid cards limit you to either RAID 1+0 or RAID 0+1, mirror/stripe with 4 drives.

However...with those 4 x 20GB 2MB you will GAIN some data security/integrity because you will have RAID 1 involved...so that is worth considering.

Not really. Sandra is the worst benchmark ever for hard drives. It would probably say a candy bar is 76x faster than a 15k RPM SCSI disk if you could somehow connect it properly.

got mine last thursday. it's fast, much faster then two of my 80GB seagates. it is not that loud, can't hear it when the sides are on. but the damn thing gets hot! i was transferring from my seagate over to the Maxtor, and the seagate was cool to the touch while the maxtor's were warm as hell! i bet this isn't good for longevity. should think about putting this in cases with a 80mm fan in front.

also, check your warranties guys. mine came in the 1 year box, but it is valid till 3-13-2006.

I bought two of these for a RAID setup. They are really quiet...much quieter then the dual Maxtor 20s that they replaced. I noticed the heat build up as well, so a fan wounld be good.
