DEAD - Maxtor 300GB 5400RPM 2MB Cache Refurb. drive $99

You might be better off getting an oem drive from newegg, about $130 shipped. 7200, 16mb and 3 year warranty. Its not that much more after shipping.

$99 for refurb 5400 RPM and 2MB cache is cold. For $99 I rather get a brand new 250GB SATA drive.

And you put a SATA drive into a Tivo how exactly? I was in mine this past weekend and don't remember seeing a SATA connecter in there anywhere. Maybe it was next to the P4 cpu... oh wait, that's not in there either.

7200's in a Tivo in unnecessary, and often unwanted. But if you're going to run 7200's in your Tivo, you probably want to look into 1)how hot they get, some are better than others and possibly 2) is there a "noise" setting available for the drive, as some can be noisy.

Then get the newest Maxtor DM10 PATA for $120 16MB 7200rpm.

not hot, maxtor reburb 5400 2mb LOL

check out pricewatch for low prices or RTPE here
not hard to find a 7200 rpm 16mb 300gb 3 year warranty

And throw away $20... hmm and people here grumble about a couple bucks shipping.

Though I'm going around in circles...

Tivos, XBOXes (I forgot about that one - thanks MoNoGoAt) will not benefit from the increase speed and it may not even be wanted - heat and noise can be issues.

People seem to be stuck on the speed. If the device won't use the extra speed anyway, what is the point of throwing away money.

As I mentioned in the OP, this is a deal for specific uses. Would I put it in my home PC? Maybe only as a backup drive. Could this be useful other places? YES Is it a good deal for those specific uses? I think so.
