(dead) - Maxtor 300GB 16Mb SATA Retail Box $79.99 shipped

Potential hot deal if you go to Office Depot and PM to Fry's, then use the $20 off $75 coupon code found at FW

YMMV, the lame employees at my local OD said they don't PM to Fry's or Costco prices though.

Western Digital Caviar RE WD3200SD 320GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive - OEM

the one at chiefvalue is "recertified"

from Chiefvalue.com:

"Recertified products are items which have been returned to an authorized factory repair facility for testing, inspection, and repair. All recertified items carry the applicable manufacturer's warranty and Chiefvalue's standard return policy. "

And WD uses what? 3 year warrantys? I would rather have a WD refurb then a brand new Maxtor, even if the warrantys were the same, which they arn't.

Better warranty, better performance, better brand.

WD refurbs only get 6 months warranty so warranty isn't better. The drive only has 8mb cache so it doesn't perform better. So you lose on two counts, and I'm not going to argue on what's a better brand because they're both good brands.

Warm at best! I've picked up a Seagate 300gb SATA2 like this one @ Fry's B&M not long ago for $82 + tax. For some reason Fry's affiliate Outpost doesn't carry this drive (at least I was unable to find).

Jesus christ people, don't flame or argue in the hot deals forum. If you don't think it is a hot deal, then don't comment on it. Some people, including myself, find this a pretty good deal. Thanks OP for the find.

😕
OK this WD is 320 Gig drive. Good.
You pay for shipping. Free shipping on the Maxtor.
The WD is OEM and recertified, Maxtor is unopened RETAIL.
The WD has 8 megs of cache, the Maxtor 16 megs.

I would like any, any, benchmark to prove that the Maxtor is better.

I'd like to see any benchmark to prove that the WD is better, the fact that the WD has 8mb cache says it has worse performance.

GEESH!!
EVERY HD manufacturer has failed numerous users.
Some swear by one brand while others hate that brand.

Most people who have had numerous comparable products of the same class from various manufacturers will tell you they ALL have about the same failure rate. That is baring the odd screw-up like the deckstar. If one manufacturer has a 15% failure rate and every other manufacturer has a 3.5% failure rate, that one company is going to go out of business.

True, on a per GB basis you can get cheaper PATA drives but this is SATA.
It's future compliant with a nifty, ubber cache and if you've used-up your computer's PATA quotient, SATA is greata for you. Otherwise you're looking at buying an IDE or SATA Controler Card.

Everytime someone posts a HD deal, the flamers come out to dispute their brand is better. My brand of cigarettes wont kill you as fast as those. All HDs die.

Oops, they wouldn't have viewed the thread if they noticed that it was for XYZ brand. BLAH! Too inferior for their fine pallet. Well, take your high-brow pallet out of here without leaving any thread crap.

Adding an alternative deal for any manufacturer would be positive.
Sighting known problems with this manufacturer, retailer, rebate company, etc. would be helpful.

If you don't have an alternative deal for the drive of your preference, you're just wasting readers' time and thread space by stating your preference. Even posting a past good deal for your prefered brand is better than just dumping on the OP's post and stating your preference only. Someone may want to wait for your deal to come around again.

As for just stating your preference and dumping on the OP's brand because one, two, three or more crapped out on you. No one cares. Everyone's here for a decent deal on a decent product that will last a decent amount of time. For everyone who's had 4 drives of one brand die, someone else has had 20 work flawlessly. For everyone who prefers one brand, someone else has had 10 drives of that brand die.

A key note IS if the drive is refurbed or not.

This is an open forum. I'm not trying to restrict anyone or even scold anyone. However thread crapping is a venal sin in forum land. It's just that we've all heard it before and noobs don't need to worry about it unless you have some new news that makes this brand any worse now than any other time.

There are numerous posts in this thread complaining about those who toot their preferred manufacturer and dump on the rest. Now I've added another and not said anything to hem or haw the merits of this deal. Oh yeah, I did about the merits of SATA, cache and cost per GB.

I got a Maxtor 300GB SATA from Outpost a while back for $79 + shipping.
They sometimes drop or add shipping on the same deal before it's over.
Mine was new ... not refurbed. Mine is great.

I've had many Maxtor's and other manufacturer's drives.
One Seagate died young. One Maxtor died after an extensive lifetime.
Numerous Seagate, WD, Maxtor HDs and yes, a Colorado HD of various standards are all ticking along nicely.

Thank you for your insights and persuit of the perfect Hard Drive.

I agree and would rather have a slightly smaller 250GB with 3-5 year warranty for the same price.

My experience with Seagate would make me pay $10 xtra not to have one. I had to RMA a Seagate drive, called and a replacement was in stock at San Antonio, TX location, I live 150 miles away. Sent drive back, paid freight. Charged me $35 for the exchange by ground shipping. Took 3 weeks and 5 days to ship!!!!! Awful service and $35 is unreasonable.
