That's correct. Those numbers don't show on the outside of the box, but those are Maxtor part numbers. The 6Y120P0 is the 8MB version, and the 6Y120L0 is the 2MB version. The 120 in the middle designates a 120GB drive. Those numbers will be printed on a label attached to the antistatic bag that seals the drive inside the box. You can tell which drive is inside an unopened box by looking at the 4-character code written vertically on the label. If it begins with a "P" then it is the 8MB cache, if it begins with an "L" then is it 2MB cache.

Nevermind, answering my own request. This is an IBM utility (well, Hitachi now), and I'm not sure why it works on a Maxtor drive. I haven't tested it, so be warned. But here you go:

Ok, to summarize once and for all:

L01P120 is the Maxtor retail kit number for the 120GB/8MB cache "Ultra series" drives (the same ones that folks in this thread are finding in the L01J100 boxes). Inside the Ultra boxes there will be a drive label on the the antistatic bag that reads 6Y120P0 ("P"=8MB cache).

L01J100 is the Maxtor retail kit number for the "100+20GB"/2MB cache drives (hence the "100" instead of "120"). Ordinarily, inside these boxes there should be a drive label on the antistatic bag that reads 6Y120L0 ("L"=2MB cache). Lucky or diligent folks are finding the 6Y120P0 drives inside instead.

On the outside of the "100+20GB" boxes there is a white label. Ignore everything written on that label except for a 4-character code printed vertically on the right side of the label. That's the key to knowing what's inside the box. If that code reads "L6Y3" then it's the 2MB cache model. If it reads "P6Y3" then it's the 8MB cache model.

Also, the reason this is happening is because Maxtor made more 8MB cache drives than they can sell, and with SATA and new platter sizes on the horizon, it's more cost-effective for them to get rid of them this way. So if you find the 8MB cache model inside these boxes, chances are they were manufactured before Maxtor switched over to a one-year warranty. Enter your drive info on the Maxtor site and you'll probably see that your drive also comes with a three-year warranty. The required information is physically printed on the outside of the actual hard drive, so you might want to do this or jot it down before you install the drive in your system.

Got a P6Y3/L01P120 with an 8MB cache, 01/13/2003 MFG date and 03/29/06 warranty expiration from my local B&M BB! Hot deals "saves" me money again...on something I had no intention of buying!

That's what I got unfortunately. I called the CSR and they are having my 60gb drive picked up and she ordered me the correct drive. They have to charge my card again and wait until they get this one back to issue me a credit though, which sucks. Oh well.

Staples sucks. I ordered this drive using a $30 off coupon. This coupon still shows in my online order status. But Staples in all their wisdom decided to charge my credit card the full amount without the coupon deducted. I have the the Staples e-mail and everything telling me what I authorized to pay, and yet Staples charged me $32 more!! Isn't that against the law to promise a person one price and then change the amount they take out of your credit card without asking you?

I sent them an e-mail and hopefully it will get corrected quickly, and I mean by tomorrow. If it doesn't, I will have to pursue this further.

Update: Staples responded via e-mail ten minutes after the complaint and said they would credit my account. While I still don't like their service, at least they responded fast to my complaint.

Funny thing is, my 48 cent pen that I used to get my order over $150 came in a separate box. Staples spent probably 2-3 dollars plus the cost of a box to ship me a pen!!!

Accidents happen... I have never had a problem with staples. If you ask me, responding to your email 10 minutes after you send it is pretty good service

Again MysticMan1, thanks for the awesome deal. I had no intention of buying yet ANOTHER 120GB drive, but once I heard that I could possibly beat the "man" I threw my hard-earned cash at the 8MB cache.

I ordered online yesterday at 3:45pm, and received the P6Y3 at 9:15am this morning.

I was all ready to hit the Staples / BB / Fry's circuit to find my 8MB cache, but I didn't have to go far this time.

They'll be calling me "Mr. Terabyte" in no time

Warranty info according to Maxtor:

Warranty starts: 3/31/03
Warranty ends: 3/30/06

Which means my warranty won't start until the end of March. LOL.
