Before you start following the guide, you need to meet two conditions: #1 you must root Kindle Fire and #2 flash a custom recovery to it. Besides this, you must keep in mind that flashing a new ROM like MIUI involves the deletion of all personal data on your Kindle Fire, so be sure to back it up!

Step 1: Download the latest version of MIUI for Kindle Fire based on Android ICS

Step 2: You must transfer this .zip file directly under /sdcard on your Kindle Fire. You can either do this on the Kindle Fire itself after downloading the ICS to it, or through a file explorer on the desktop. Works either way.

Step 3: Once transfer is complete, shut down your Kindle Fire.

Step 4: Boot into a custom recovery. ClockworkMod Recovery and TWRP are popular choices and you can choose to install whichever you like.

Step 5: Take a NANDROID backup. This may come handy later on if you have problems with MIUI and wish to revert back to current setup.

Step 6: Do a complete wipe & factory reset from the custom recovery.

Warning: This will delete all your personal data.

Step 7: Flash the ROM you transferred to your Kindle in Step 1. In CWM, you can do this from install zip from sdcard > choose zip from sdcard > [.zip file from Step 1]

Step 8: Wipe both cache and Dalvik cache.

Step 9: Reboot!

Not for me, and I find book text just as easy to read indoors on the Fire as on my e-ink Kindle.

Sideloading works fine. Just install a free file manager like ES File Explorer, Go to Settings > More, Device, Allow Installation of Applications, and change it to ON, download APKs, then go to the Downloads folder using ES File Explorer.

Music quality through headphones is great, using $60 Sennheiser over-the-ear phones it sounded as good as my iPod.

Netflix playback works well, and I didn't have any problems doing it from 30' away from my DSL router.

Web browsing is a little awkward since the touch response is a little erratic. The pop-up keyboard works great but trying to tap on something like a web link may take a couple of tries.
 
If rooted would one of these work just like any other Android tablet? Or are there limitations?
 
We flip flopped a for a couple months, wife nixed eInk due to no backlight, last night the Kindle Nook war ended with a Nook tablet. Seems great for the intended media and limited browsing (already decided on a case and that its going to be a REGULAR item to have in the car for wifi surfing).

On point of thread, I'm thinking rooting one of these ereaders isn't the best way to get android. For full android I think I am going in the direction of a phone to get a physically smaller device, pocket sized, and focus its use on non media stuff, which means a cheap android phone with wifi and not the latest android version should be fine.
 
I know a few people who have the kindle fire and they love it. Most places I have read reviews about it or comments from people who have them, all stated that the kindle fire was the greatest thing for reading books. Also, good price on that link.

No webcam or mic, no SD card slot for bulk storage.

Not sure why you'd want to root it since you can sideload apps without doing that.
 
looooooooooooooooove my Kindle Fire. There's a few gripes to it, but for $199, or in this case, $169, you can NOT go wrong.
 
If your goal is to turn it into a regular Android tablet, wouldn't the $249 nook be a better idea? $50 gets you an extra 512MB for 1GB total, extra 8GB internal storage for 16GB total, physical volume buttons and external micro SD card slot.

i think the bootloader is locked on that, i suggest looking into it for those interested in this. the original nook color is very hack friendly but the specs are not very good, even when its overclocked its slow

great price on the Fire, OP. my mom likes hers, and if you were on the fence about a tablet this is a great price to try one.
 
as far as i can tell, the kindle fire still can't work with the harmony link T.T which might be a reason to root it
