How did the game pass quality control with so many crashing issues?

On the steam forums there have been post after post of graphics issues, especially resizing the graphics.

Blank screen issues have been reported.

Broken multiplayer.

When the multiplayer does work, there are the open mics.

How did DI ever make it past quality control and get released?

Who need quality control? This is nothing new, most games release in a early beta stage. The formula is simple, release now, if enough people buy it, patch it. Otherwise quit on it and let the fan community do it for you. Meanwhile you move to the next project.

I guess the days of releasing a quality product are long gone - doom, quake, half-life, quake team fortress, team fortress classic, counter-strike,,,,,.

These days we, get rubber stamp games that are full of bugs.

Same here, other than MP being down I'm having a great time in SP without issue. Was able to tweak the graphics up a bit as well as switch the FOV (just did this one today) with a little config file editing and it looks & plays great.

So, wound up buying the game while it was 20% off. Figured I'd take a risk since it had the best elements from some of my favorite games, plus its own flair.

Only 2 hours in, but I'm having a blast so far.

It ran fine with no crashes, but I did notice two bugs. Firstly, there's no explosion or fire for things like moltov cocktails or explosive tanks. There's lighting, sound, and actual damage but no visible flames or anything. Secondly, I swapped the Use (f) and Kick (e) keys. They performed their new function, but the new kick key (f) also still did the Use action. It was interesting to simultaneously kick and pull my weapon out of the zombie, but it was a PITA when I went to kick something but it also grabbed the nearby energy drink mid combat. Neither bug is critical or serious, but they aren't something that should be on the back burner, so to speak. Note that I haven't researched to see if anyone else experienced these, so it might be isolated to just me.

Once I edited the config file by hand, the graphics are actually pretty good. Texture resolutions can be a little low at times, but don't fall quite as low as some textures in DEHR. Textures are certainly more consistent in DI than DEHR. Animations seem fine from what I've noticed, though that's mostly just been two types of zombies doing their thing. As a whole, for a DX9 game, it looks good. Certainly nothing record shattering, but it looks significantly better than on a console.

I like the weapon degredation system. Non-upgraded basic weapons degrade faster than upgraded ones, but still last a plenty long time. I upgraded a low-durability knife to Tier 3 (as I call it), and it lasts MUCH longer than it did at Tier 1.

The inventory system also seems fine to me, though it could be improved since it still is designed for a controller on consoles. Thankfully they did add a few mouse-based shortcuts which speed things up, but it still has some annoying console-oriented layout and features.

I also love the weapon throwing system. It's a blast to throw a propane tank into a group of zombies, throw a knife to blow it up, hurl my other knife into a chest of another zombie, and jump kick a final zombie. By that time the zombie with the knife in his chest is staggering back, so I pull it out, decapitate him, then execute the final zombie as he tries to get up.

It ties well into the location-specific damage and dismemberment system. For example, on one zombie I threw a knife directly into his nose, and I noticed that it cut off *just* his nose. I hit a zombie on the left side of their head with a pipe, just the left side of their head caves in. Stuff like that. It reminds me heavily of Die by the Sword.

The voice acting -- without accents -- is actually fine, but once the actors start faking Australian accents it goes south fast (ha, bad pun). I did also notice one or two clipping issues where my hand went through a door or a parasol. And it seems like in this game zombies need air. I kicked a few zombies into a pool and if their head is underwater they continually take drowning/water damage. It was odd, but strangely amusing as I kept kicking a zombie to keep his head underwater until he drowned. Oh, and the voice acting seems to assume you're male and are with more than one person, at least the first main quest giver. He keeps using both singular pronouns such as "him" when referring to you even though I was one of the female characters, and plurals such as "you all," implying there's more than one player when there aren't.

Anywho. I only played some single player, but like I said, it was a lot of fun. It needs some spit and polish for a few things, but at least on my setup it ran good, looked good, and played good (sans the two bugs I found). I just hope it doesn't bomb out as I progress :p

Is this game at least a bit frightening or you just roll on zombies and laugh all the way?

no
u arent a tank you have to pick ur spots for the most part
depend on what u consider frightening

I suppose he means is it a creeper game designed to frighten you--like Resident Evil, or a mindless kill shit sort of game that happen to be zombies--like LFD.

what a ridiculous and unsubstantiated generalization. you think there weren't utter crap beta games released in that generation of games as well? and that there aren't polished well-executed releases now?

Well, I played a couple of hours of this game at a friend's place, and watched him play some more. I have to say I think its a decent game, but, its not something I'd spend 50 bucks on. I'll buy it when it goes on sale or something.

There's DLC coming out later this month. That takes some audacity - charging people for more content in such a broken game. But people will lap it up.

Hdeck, the config file is in the game's save game directory, which I think is in My Documents or something like that. It's Video.scr or Audio.scr, depending on what you want to modify. Just open the file in notepad, and set the file read only once you're done so it doesn't accidentally get overwritten by the game/patch/etc. Both files are commented by the developers as to what option does what, and the range of values.

Not really frightening; it's broad daylight and you're on a tropical island. Some zombies play dead with other mutilated corpses that look like zombies, and sometimes they'll go for a cheap shock value by having one jump at you when opening a door. I don't think either is overused so far, but if it's one of the basic zombies you can hear them groaning behind the door anyway. Some zombies, like Thugs, howl/scream in the distance and you can hear it echo about a good bit before you stumble across one. Those times you'll find yourself looking about to see if a zombie is merely making noise in the distance, or is charging you. Audio cues are pretty important as it's easy to get cornered or flanked in the close environments with limited line of sight, so hearing the groans of a zombie coming at you from the side/behind can easily make the difference between life and death in some situations.

You also won't really steamroll, either. It's an RPG, so the combat pacing is closer to something like Fallout NV than L4D. The zombies do have level scaling, though might be a smidgen below you. Sonly a rare few zombies actually wield weapons (that I've seen so far), it's not like Oblivion where bandits are coming at you fully kitted in obsidian. With the rate the weapons scale and your own skills, you'll *quickly* get to the point where you can one-hit kill the trash zombies with a well-place strike or critical hit. So even though they scale, it's not as WTF-inducing as Oblivion's original scaling.

I got in a few more hours of gametime today, and still really enjoying the game. Though, I did run into the alcohol "bug". Basically, whenever you have a full inventory you're supposed to hold the action key to swap with whatever weapon is on the ground. But the game doesn't make you hold, it just automatically swaps it out. Alcohol is a usable item, so it can be wielded like a weapon and is stackable. If you already have alcohol in your inventory and try to pick up another bottle, instead of just adding it to the pile in your inventory it disarms your equipped weapon then equips the alcohol. It's more annoying than anything, but if you don't remember to re-equip your weapon then you can find yourself getting drunk while a zombie happily chews on your face.

Anywho. I can easily see people really segmented over this game. The totally botched steam release gave them a lot of bad press, and the sheer divide between people who seem to have bug ridden experiences and others like me who are basically playing with no real issues just serves to split the likes and dislikes. Kotaku did an article on how the game got a range from 30 to 90 on review sites, kinda highlighting the segmentation I mentioned.

No to both questions. Although it has a serious tone, it's not really a horror game. The tone is more like Resident Evil 5 (action oriented with a horror theme) than the original Resident Evil (lots of scare/jump moments). There's no jump moments but there are some intense moments when you get overwhelmed with zombies all around you. (Just a quick note, I think this game is a lot better than RE5).

I'm 2/3 through the game (just started Act 3) having done all the side quests and have put in about 20 hours. My overall impression is positive and I think that this is a very good game. The strengths definitely outweigh the negatives and the game is better than the sum of its parts. The voice acting is surprisingly decent but the game has a very weak narrative to string you along. Also, I've been playing single player but the narrative acts as if I'm part of a group of four (the selectable characters) who are unaffected by the virus. The only time I see the other three are during the cutscenes. So I think it would make more sense if you play multiplayer which I am planning on doing after I beat it.

I think it's one of the better games that have come out this year but am not sure I would pay full price for it. The $34 I payed for it is definitely worth out but I think it's worth $40 would be a fair price. If you haven't bought it already and are still on the fence I'd recommend waiting for the steam halloween sale. I imagine it'll be discounted then and by that time it should be patched well (although I'm having no problems with the current patch).
