I've had my unit for a few days and this thing is loud as hell. It seems that the fans have automatic control, however mine never turn down. Any fixes for this? I'm using the original EMC software.

I have not tried the EMC software (went directly to WHS since I have a technet license), but I'm pretty sure that's not normal. On boot the fans go full speed for a couple of seconds, but then they quickly die down. Under normal use mine is very quiet.

Did you update the CPU? If so, maybe the CPU isn't compatible and/or it's overheating?

It is very tempting at the price point, but I already have a WHS box.. I suppose I won't have a need for this? Can I run WHS for backups and streaming for this box at the same time?

Well, I'm debating pulling the trigger on this and using my current HTPC/server as an HTPC only.

I would have at most 10 people connected at one time (but usually would be 2-3 people accessing it at a time), and it would only be doing file server, DNS/DHCP (maybe on those), do VPN stuff for one client, maybe FTP, and some other real basic stuff. No AD, or any other server-y things. All of this would only have one or two users connected at a time.

I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise on mine with 1gb of memory, every else stock. I updated a couple drivers from Windows Update, but don't remember installing anything else. Performance is very acceptable for what little remote desktop administration I need to do. To/from modern drives (1.5tb/2tb), this thing screams (not using any RAID). Usually run 65-80mb/sec writing to it from the network. Copying files between local drives I've seen 120mb/sec.

Aside from VPN, I can't see anything on your list that I'd call CPU intensive. Even that is probably fine with one session. Might want to see how it performs with just a memory upgrade before messing with the CPU.

Yeah, that was kind of what I thought as well (do memory first, then go from there). Thanks for the input regarding Windows 7 Enterprise. Since the server edition does away with the Aero interface and that stuff, it should be fine I'd think.

I have 2. One running the EMC software and the other running WHS. The WHS box is a lot quieter than the EMC box because the fans aren't running as fast. The WHS box is sitting right beside me so it's a good thing.

This is an incredible deal. Does it let you leave your drives in their original NTFS format, and access each independently? Or do you have to reformat them and switch to RAID?

what's the advantage to running uTorrent on a WHS?

Simply that you don't have to have your main rig which sucks more Watts on when it's running. Since the server (at least mine) is running almost 24/7. I can shut everything else down and still have torrents running.

My power draw for my Acer H340 is 60w for 4 drives. And I attached an eSATA port multiplier 4-bay external (4 drives here as well). Total usage is around 90w. So atm, my WHS is currently running 8.77 TB 24/7 with 8 drives, and it uses only 90W in total. Which is quite awesome vs running 200w rig 24/7

Ah yeah, sorry. I had to use their Contact Us form to get the guy to generate an invoice which I could pay online. Pretty goofy system but I guess when you've got something no one else sells you can be a little eccentric Seriously though, to be fair, I suspect they're not really oriented towards us 1-unit purchasers. It did ship quickly (same day IIRC) after I got the invoice and the whole process, while a tad awkward, did go rapidly.

$35 plus $7 s/h for me.

DING! The adapter you found is x16 to x16. The mobo has a x1 connector, and most graphics cards have x16 connectors.

One could certainly modify that x16 adapter if one were mildly mechanically oriented. (The x1 to x16 I got is clearly the same top-end without all the ribbon headers populated.) I picked the faster and lower risk path and just paid the extra $20-odd

Another trick is a small pci 1x extender from ebay PLUS a star tec 1x to 16x pcie adapter from amazon or the egg. You need to remove the drive carrier assembly also. Not the steadiest assembly but care and a little tape to steady it and you are all set for as long as you need to install openfiler or WHS (if you dont do the wegotserved blind install trick). I am currently waiting on a bigger DOM to install openfiler on.

Since my cleverness with the $17 suggestion, above, has been noted -- that it's challenging to stuff an x16 paddle into an x1 slot -- I expect there's something ridiculous with the following suggestion: regarding those those cheap x1 risers on EBay... any reason you can't just Dremel-out the rear-end of the x1 riser's slot and use it with x16 graphics cards? There would still be two alignment surfaces (the front end and the standard key-barrier) to keep things in place.

As examples of such riser's, I'll link two -- a stubby one for $4.20 and a cable-joined one for $6.19 -- and risk being thrashed for making an EBay link as I'm just showing the type of product, not advocating any in particular (and certainly unaffiliated with them).
