I do not have my SS4200 yet, but I went ahead and downloaded WHS from my action pack and all of the other things I needed. I used the DOS zip that was posted and was able to create the install USB key with no problems during the creation process. The issue is that I use the USB key on my laptop and let it start to auto install. It gets to the part where it says that it will reboot the OS, after it copies the files for the install right after it formats the drive, but then when it reboots it starts over again with the drive format! It's in a continuous loop for the first part of the install and never moves past that first reboot. Not really sure what to do at this point. Is it just a compatibility issue with my computer or an issue with the USB/install.

Anyone seen this issue on other forums or experienced it themselves?

I think that may be just because your laptop was set to boot first from the flash drive. When you get your NAS it will only boot from the flash drive the 1st time when you have the reset button pressed. After the NAS reboots it will continue the install correctly.

Good suggestions, I will reset the boot order upon the first reboot when I get home and see what it does.

Thanks!

I just built up the NAS last night. 4 x Seagate Barracuda LP 1.5TB drives (5 year warranty). Went smooth and I was watching movies off of it in no time. It has absolutely outstanding throuput.

This will act as a backup to my WHS. Why do I need a backlup solution for my backup? Because I've been unlucky with WHS. I've had drives fail on me, and WHS makes it very difficult to figure out which drives are which. I've lost countless movies, music and photos from delayed write fail errors on this sucker. I no longer trust it, so now I'm going to make sure the most important files are backed up again.

It's a shame - I want to love my WHS server. It's in a sexy server case with 32 hot-swappable removable SATA and triple redundant power supplies.

Follow the slipstream instructions posted earlier in this thread. Or, get a usb floppy drive...I've got one that i keep around for times like this.
Also, bios doesn't report it correctly but windows will see your dual core.

Hi (Ahodge),

I tried to install WHS and could not load the SATA drivers using F6 -- supports only by floppy drive, and SS4200 has no floppy drive. Tried to redirect to USB Thump and could not make it work. Then I spent all night creating a slip stream WHS that includes the SATA drivers and my DVD would not boot (tried 3 different ways based on google links). Also wonder with SATA drivers I needs from many included on zip file?

Is there a way to make F6 work? Ahodge?
Or anyone can give me a slipstream instructions that works with WHS recently?

Also, I noted that the BIOS shows with 2GB Corsair and E5200:
1) 1MB and 2) One CPU -- not Duo!

Wonder if WHS will see 2GB and 2 processors???

gwynethgh resolved my fan issue with FAN CONTROL ZONE 2 -- Thanks

Decided to use WHS instead of EMC for file compatibility issues with EMC as it emulates Windows files in UNIX. Did discover that EMC has Windows Domain Security settings capabilities -- but awkwardly implemented.

Thank you for all your help. Hope I can get F6 or slipstream WHS implemented!

The folks over at WeGotServed.com report that the E5xxx family CPUs do NOT work correctly - they may show up as dual core, but the clocks apparently never kick up to the full speed.

FWIW, my BIOS shows 2GB with my 2GB module, so I wonder what's going on in wouterkcs's case....

AH! I have an e2xxx series. my bad. Yeah 2GB should show up fine. I thought he was talking about 1MB cache.

Overkill much?

If you lost a lot of stuff, that means your WHS was more of a file server than a backup server right? Otherwise you would still have your original copy on your client machines.

The best way, of course, with important data is to have multiple copies. Thus, a backup of a backup totally makes sense.

Last night I went through the install process again and upon first reboot, I changed the boot order to the hard drive first. After doing that the old school blue windows install screen comes up asking for F6 drivers, then goes into setup windows install and just blue screens. Not sure what the deal is, but I guess I will find out if it works for the SS4200 when I get it tomorrow.

That's where you have to put in the AHCI drivers again. I guess you didn't cause earlier in the installation it detected your drives fine, right? Well, you need to put those AHCI drivers in at the F6 prompt or, you'll experience that lovely ol' BSoD.

The AHCI drivers should be on the disk twice as stated in the tutorial. I incorporated the DOS folder that the other user (forgot who) posted during the creation of the folders, then at the end I added all of those files inside of the i386 folder as instructed. So they should be there twice.

Does it sound like I did something wrong?

Is that bluescreen ONLY for the laptop? or will I experience similar problems during the SS4200 install? I was doing the laptop install as a test to make sure the USB key was correct, and now I'm running into this problem. I didn't see any tips or known things about installing on a laptop.

Well, as long as the laptop uses the exact same chipset, SATA controller, and ethernet controller as the SS4200E then you're fine. Otherwise you'll get bluescreens because you didn't load the correct drivers for the *LAPTOP*......

Well I was working on the assumption that you didn't need any special drivers for the laptop because the built in drivers within Windows would work. I never had to install any drivers for Vista or Windows 7. This is the first time I've installed Home Server though, so it may lack support for things that Vista/Win 7 have out of the box.

Thanks for the info though. I will find out as soon as I get my SS4200.

Finally got WHS working on SS4200-E. Intel Core Due2 working fine -- shows 2 processors.
RAM, using 2GB Corsair 6400 shows only 1MB.

Anyone, what best/inexpensive 2GB RAM will work that utilizes the 2GB -- not the one 1 GB as it does with Corsair DDR2 6400 RAM?

Thanks,

Oh, yes -- can anyone direct me (links) to some good user manuals for WHS?
Like to use WHS as a file storage unit for home and SBS 2008.

Any suggestions are welcome!

Thanks,

Please check with CPU-Z and see if your CPU ever gets to the full speed - post your CPU model and results. WGS folks saw 2 cores on E5xxx series, but even under heavy transcoding the CPUs would refuse to come out of the low-frequency mode. If you're getting full speed and both cores on an E5xxx it's worth some investigation - 'cuz a lot of folks would like to duplicate those results!!!!

Thanks,
Richard

I use Kingston HyperX. Shows full 2GB.

ahodge -- exact model of Kingston? Wonder if you can purchase a 2B stick? My Corsair 6400 was a part of a 2x 2GB = 4GB total.

I tested the E5200 with PRIME, and YES, max Core speed is 1200 using 6x multiplier. I tried to use the latest Intel chipset drivers and that did not fix it. How do we fix that? Ashame if the E5200 doesn't work properly -- paid just $ 39 at black Friday sales. What dual core does work?

Thanks

Go look at the thread on WGS. You're basically SOL with the E5xxx series CPUs.

E2200s or e45/4600s appear to be ok. I will be trying an E4500 within a week or so. (waiting on a pcie extender to see into the bios).
