Agreed. I read the reviews and the EMC software seemed the only thing holding this back, so I didn't even bother trying it. Plus I've wanted a WHS for a long time. And YES, WHS has Media Center integration (Windows 7 MC integration with PP3 as well). Also, XBOX 360 support...

I probably will wipe it and put FreeNAS on it. I don't have an Xbox so that doesn't matter.

I've read FreeNAS isn't 100% compatible with this unit. Apparently FreeNAS/FreeBSD doesn't support ACPI very well or something to that nature.

I saw that but then I read someone saying that it worked. I'll give it a shot anyway.

Does anyone know what the max memory this can hold is?

The lifeline software will only recognize 1GB, if you put something else on it will probably recognize up to 2.

I can confirm, it supports at least a 2GB stick in that slot...That's what I'm running.

Kingston HyperX. I don't remember speeds and timings. Fast, but the box doesn't use them to full potential.

The chipset officially supports PC2-4200 & PC2-5300 (400/533MHz).

BTW, this thing is WAY bigger than the pictures seem to indicate.

Not sure. It's a Buy.com third party seller so I'm not sure that it qualifies for Bing cash back (i.e. Buy.com is selling for Legend Micro).

Also, as Gillbot suggested, search for the NAS model number and then look under Buy it Now. Make sure to go through the Bing eBay 10% link first and check out with PayPal.

Here is one of the auctions...(assuming link works - but remember to go through cash back links for Bing and not just use my link).

Just a heads up that you can get the rebranded one here for $169.xx - 15% (current eBay Bing cashback - search for "Nintendo wii" (no quotes) from Bing.com and click on 15% eBay Bing banner). $143.xx shipped! 🙂

Speaking of:

Looks like they only gave me 5% even though the page showed 10% when I clicked thru.

Everything is working fine when upgrading to an Intel E5200 (Core Duo 2) but my now the fans make a lot of noise. Put original one back, and now it is very quiet again.

Any reason why? How do I fix it?

Thanks,

Thanks,

I believe that the E5200 is NOT compatible with the BIOS in the server per the wegotserved thread on upgrading the CPU. The E2200 and E4500 and the others in those families are though.

Thanks,

Most likely, the E5200 is pulling quite a bit more power than the Celeron, causing the case/power supply fans to ramp up quite a bit. The power supply in this thing isn't very large and most certainly isn't a quite model, especially if put under any sort of load.

Thanks,

From wegotserved "Just wanted to follow up and say that the Pentium Dual Core E5200 @2.5GHZ has been working great for 3 months now.

I ended up scrapping the ability to control the fans directly off of CPU temp as the BIOS doesn't reconize the dual core temperature monitoring. However, monitoring both case temp and core temp, I've found they are relatively linear to one another. When the case is hot, the CPU is hot, and vice versa.

So I ended up configuring both fans to control their speed off of zone 2 which is case temp. Depending on load, the CPU cores report between 42C-50C. The fans are pretty quiet though you can hear them change under load. This is will the stock SS4200 heatsync.

Also as part of the "upgrade", I added a SIL3132 PCIe x1 raid card on a right angle riser and a custom dual 2.5" drive bracket. This way I boot off the SIL3132 2.5" 7200rpm mirrored set as opposed to the raid 5. It's a tight nice fit and works great and leaves me the 4 Drive raid 5 set to use for storage space.

Overall I'm really pleased with the SS4200, Server 2003, 2GB ram, and the Intel E5200."

Anyone know if I can add a external USB drive that already has allot of data on it? I'd like to just plug my old/existing backup USB drives in and go.

You can add drives with data as long as you don't add them to the storage pool (which wipes the drives). You'll have to use the remote desktop connection to move the files to a shared folder if you want to add it to the pool. I don't think you can just attach it and, say, stream the files to another pc.

No pci 1x card here. Frigging serial port doesn't seem to work either. I bought a null modem cable but the putty session doesn't show any output. The blue power light keeps blinking and I'm sure its a setting in the bios but I can't get to it.
I guess the only way out would be to just purchase a 1x card and a riser cable. Sucks.
Merry Christmas.

Hi (Ahodge),

I tried to install WHS and could not load the SATA drivers using F6 -- supports only by floppy drive, and SS4200 has no floppy drive. Tried to redirect to USB Thump and could not make it work. Then I spent all night creating a slip stream WHS that includes the SATA drivers and my DVD would not boot (tried 3 different ways based on google links). Also wonder with SATA drivers I needs from many included on zip file?

Is there a way to make F6 work? Ahodge?
Or anyone can give me a slipstream instructions that works with WHS recently?

Also, I noted that the BIOS shows with 2GB Corsair and E5200:
1) 1MB and 2) One CPU -- not Duo!

Wonder if WHS will see 2GB and 2 processors???

gwynethgh resolved my fan issue with FAN CONTROL ZONE 2 -- Thanks

Decided to use WHS instead of EMC for file compatibility issues with EMC as it emulates Windows files in UNIX. Did discover that EMC has Windows Domain Security settings capabilities -- but awkwardly implemented.

Thank you for all your help. Hope I can get F6 or slipstream WHS implemented!
