DEAD: Intel 320 80GB SSD SATA II - $80 AR + Free Shipping

Great deal, and I had no problem with the rebate. Just be aware, even for a rebate it's a long one.

Your Amex® Gift Card will be mailed within 8-10 weeks . Please contact
us if you have any additional questions.
That's after a few weeks for the order to process up to that point.

Yeah, this deal is really good, especially for an Intel drive.

Similar to the BF deals, and just as hot.

I'm interested in an ssd to decrease start up time. Are they pretty effective at that and about how much space is needed?

Yes

You need about 40gbs for the OS and "normal programs" (office, pdf, firefox, chrome, etc).

Add more space if you want to run big programs like photoshop, or if you want to run games on it.

80gb is plenty if you limit yourself to 1 or 2 big games.

I would jump on this deal in a heartbeat if you want to reduce start up time.

I bought the Kingston SSDNow 40 GB in December 2010 for $90. It's a rebranded Intel. That $90 was the single best investment I have ever made with regards to computing. That SSD has been rock solid and my start up times literally went from minutes to seconds.

SSDs:

Pros:
FAST
No noise (no mechanical parts to create noise)
Lower power draw
More durable
Less space in the case
Less heat creation

Cons:
New tech with less of a history....all these SSDs might start breaking down in 2 years
Learning curve (they can be tricky to install and require a bit more research...for example, I quickly had to learn the difference between ACHI and IDE and how to turn on ACHI in my BIOS. And I also needed to learn about TRIM.
Storage size and price....still smaller than traditional platter drives and also more expensive.

Pros and cons above are just my humble opinion.

I agree with Roland and Rivet. I've been using a 120gb Intel 320 (same as this model, just a little more space) since April, and it's been fantastic. I'm getting in on this deal for my next build. 80gb is plenty for an OS and all programs in my experience. For games, I have Steam set up to install all games onto a 1TB Samsung SpinPoint, and when I'm playing one game a lot, I just move the files to the SSD and point Steam towards that folder. You can find lots of info on how to do this using Google.

Was going to get in on this but the $20 code is not working for me.

I get 'Although you've entered a valid promo code IntelSSD, your order does not currently meet the code's usage criteria'.

EDIT: Found code EMCYTZT1061 actually works for the $20 off.

New code: EMCYTZT1061

If you don't have an SSD yet, this is absolutely a must buy. This is big enough to hold W7, your office apps, and a few major games. And it will change the way you think about computers.

Guess I should have hit refresh before taking the time to search for a working current code. 😉

Order placed and rebate process started.

It is now front page on SD, so if you are on the fence you probably should decide soon before they sell out.

(hint take the plunge, it is so worth it)

I got the email and saw this deal too. I came here to hear what the feedback was about the drive itself because I'm rebuilding my computer (mobo died) and would love to use an SSD for the OS.

I soooo hate rebates though, in fact I usually don't buy anything that has a rebate involved with it but this seems like a really good deal.

EDIT: The rebate is an American Express gift card. That really sucks because a lot of people don't take amex.

Every gas station in the U.S. takes AmEx. If you own a vehicle, I'm sure you will go through the gift card in no time 🙂

I have agoraphobia (long story), I've put about 1 mile on my car last year moving it in and out of my driveway so I could get my trash cans out. In fact I just had to buy a battery conditioner because it sits so long. :|

I also read some reviews and people aren't getting the rebates. I'm going to pass on it, I have such bad luck with rebates that I don't want to chance it.

Does this drive look like a decent alternative? It's 120GB and doesn't come with mounting hardware (I'm sure I have some lying around), so you need to take that into account with the price:

That's actually an excellent drive. It was $125 last week, but even at $135 shipped, it's a very good deal. It's a Sandforce Gen. 1 drive, slightly faster than the Intel 320. If you have the money for it, it's potentially an even better deal - practically the same amount per GB, no rebate, and 50% more space.

FYI, price trend: http://camelegg.com/product/N82E16820171545

BTW, IMO mounting hardware is overrated. Not that it's not a nice thing to have, but worst case you can just lay the SSD on the bottom of your case. That's how I have it in my HTPC because I didn't have space to mount it. Now, if anyone can tell me I'm going to short the drive out in some mysterious way, please let me know, but it hasn't caused me any trouble yet. SSDs weigh about as much as a couple of memory sticks. They are practically weightless.

Thanks for the feedback, I went for the larger drive and saved myself the grief over the rebate process.

I had to pay for a weeks worth of painkillers that weren't in my formulary and the docs office was closed for new years weekend, so I couldn't have them call anything else in. It cost me $96 frickin' bucks for ten days worth of meds and its looking like I'm not going to get reimbursed for it. FML :colbert: (I didn't even fill the entire thing, that would have cost $240+)

But I digress, thanks again. This will be my first SSD and I'm really looking forward to it.

FWIW, my rebate was processed and approved today. Not bad turn around (about 10 days). Now let's see how long it takes them to send the $50 gift card...
