I can't believe that this thread hasn't become more popular than it is. Seriously, how can you possibly beat a 16x Cd writer for $35?! You would be hard-pressed to find a CD reader at this price! So buy if for no other reason than to have a backup reader...you know all those things are practically guaranteed to fail within 2 years, usually less. Or maybe I've just had bad luck with CD drives, who knows. Thanks for the great deal though!
Nack or anyone else that have recently pruchase the I/O Magic 24x drive and have gotten a Lite-on mfg drive. Can you post a mfg number or serial number that's on the outside box that would help other identify which box contains the Lite-on mfg drive.
The box was pre-printed, and doesn't appear to have any extra labels on it with serial number, etc., except for one that says free Nero is included. I think the outside of the box would be the same no matter what was in it. On a brighter note, the boxes at my omax were not shrink-wrapped, so if you run into a nice manager, he may just let you open a couple and look.

2 quick questions....which one is more likley to be a lite-on? does the 16x Cendyne do sd2? i read the review links about the lite-on drives provided and the site seemed a lot more positive on the 24x.
I am going back and forth on this deal. The speed difference is not that great, considering i would upgrading from a non buffer under-run protected 4x teac, so I am more concerned with the quality of the drive. So if they are about the same and the only major difference is the speed, I would go with the Cendyne.

So far two poeple that said they purchased the CenDyne 16x, said they received a Accesstek mfg Drive. One person that purchased the I/O Magic said he received a Lite-on.

That info I'm pretty sure is good for Cendyne, but I don't think it works for I/O Magic. No serial number on the outside of the box for the I/O Magic/Lite-On that I bought. Of course, if you are able to open up the box for the I/O Magic (which were not sealed, where I got mine), you can use that info to look at the serial number on the actual drive. Of course, if you can see the actual drive, and you want a Lite-On, the "LTR-24102B" is also helpful.

My local OM (VA) only had Cendyne (accesstek drives) , I had them go check the back room for an different serial numbers and they couldn't find any... not only that, but it has NTI burning software or something? Is it still worth it, they did give me the 25 off 100 in the store.

Upon opening the box, here's what I found on the drive itself:
S/N: 15009870KN E4
The biggest giveaway: on the right side of the label on the CD-RW itself, in real small lettering, under the FCC Regulations.....it says AOpen Inc.
So.....should I goto my local OfficeMax and see if they have any Lite-On's there? Does the AOpen have Burnproof? Can someone provide the link to the reviews of drives?

I was initially going to head over to OfficeMax to do a search for some Liteon CD-RW's, but after reading the reviews at CDRINFO.com....I wasn't really compelled.
I just may go to OfficeMax (need to go there anyways) and see the other drives they have in stock, but if I keep the AOpen, I won't be dissappointed. The speed tests are all within like 10 seconds of each other (TDK, Plextor, Liteon, AOpen). So, that's not really an issue. I guess the AOpen drives won't copy "SD2" copy protected CD's. Which means you can't rip your CD's that are copy protected in that format, which the LiteOn drives can do. Is this worth the hassle?

I just got my Cendyne 16x drive today. It is an Accesstek drive. I checked both OfficeMax locations near me and all of theirs in-stock were also Accesstek drives, or at least also had serial numbers beginning ACA... on them. I did finally find the Accesstek website at http://www.accesstek.com.tw. The firmware page has no downloads although my drive has a manufacture date of Dec 2001. In fact, their entre website still seems to be in progress. Also, their faq section alqays refers to their drives by the name OptoRite. Okay, so I went to http://www.optorite.com and sure enough, there is the Accesstek drive that is in my Cendyne box. No links, just the data sheet. Anyone no anything then about this brand?
I justed wanted to add that i got my acer 24x i got from OM to work buring sd2. Plus it works fine.
I just got my 24x10x40 I/O Magic burner from OfficeMax delivered. It's definately an Acer. You can tell by the design of the bezel. It's got the ugly flip down cover (to which the tray then slides out) and the typical Acer Firmware on the label (this one is P.JJ).
Since it is beige and my computer is white, it's going to clash big time. I'm going to return it although it's probably a good drive. Just can't get over the color and that ugly flip down tray.
