Well, I could not resist - got the 4870 on the way.

BTW, the promo code for $15 off mentioned in the OP did work for me. With the promo code, tax, and free shipping, it came out to $198.40 for me in California - not too bad. I just have to keep my fingers crossed that the $20 MIR works out, too.
 
Looks like a hot deal - seems to benchmark better than the more expensive 260 cards. Are there new cards coming out soon that are driving this price down?

The 4870 tends to do a bit better than the 192-core GTX 260, while the 216-core 260 (combined with the performance nVidia unlocked with the 180.xx drivers) tends to have better performance than the Radeons (except 4870x2 of course). Note that many of the benchmarks will show a win for one card or the other simply because some games seem to favor the nVidia architecture and vice versa.

Both are awesome cards, and I was surprised at how well the HD4870 performed when AA is enabled. I kept hearing about the awful ATI drivers but I actually had very few problems; they ran pretty much every game I threw at them.

Anyway, this is a great price and don't be discouraged that it's the 512MB version. The gains by going to the 1GB card aren't that great from what I've seen and this one is powerful enough to run Crysis, Far Cry 2, Dead Space, etc. at 1920x1080 smoothly with high detail. Not sure about 2560x1600, but you could always pick up a second one and Crossfire them for about the same price as a single GTX 280 🙂
 
Coupon code is still working and this deal is still the hottest around (believe me, I searched for a lower price for about four hours last night 😉 ).

Works with the Live Cashback thing too, though it's only at %2.75 anymore...
 
Hmm, currently own 850xt and after the fps jitter in shooting games plus the control panel .net bloatware bs messing up my system I swore to never go ATI again, but this is tempting. I need a new vid card for my new core 2 duo system, currently looking at gtx260s. Anybody know if they at least fixed the frame stutter on their newer cards with newer drvers possibly?

EDIT: Doh, only 512megs, I'll pass anyway now.
 
Never had any jitter with my Visiontek, actually I was pleased to find that the latest drivers worked quite well. The 1GB card doesn't provide much of a gain in most games, though I imagine that difference might become larger in future demanding titles. Of course, you can't go wrong with a 260 either, especially the newer revision.

Yeah, already GTA 4 needs 1 gig vid ram to have high quality on. It's only going to get worse, or in this case better 🙂.

At high resolutions with heavy AA enabled it makes quite a large difference.

Deal dead? The code was working for me last night, but not today. Also, last night my total with tax was coming to $195 before rebate; has the instant discount changed? I am depressed, I was looking forward to ordering a $195 4870 today!
