ti4200 and mx are like night and day. Or day and night.

The 4200 is a fast 3d gaming card.

If you are going to use this as a gaming machine, by all means get the Ti4200. Unless you can buy one for the cost of the upgrade. Then you could sell the MX card to someone.

I've read on another board that people who have ordered 2 "less than $749 systems" using the extra $50 off coupon are having their orders cancelled or put on hold. Has anyone done this since Sunday and had their orders cancelled or put on hold?

I got a confirmation email on mine ("Dell Order Acknowledgement") and it shows both systems and the discount (-$300 on systems, -$198 on shipping, total $1230), but the systems have been sitting on Production status (kitting not complete) for over a day now. That seems like it is on hold. The other 3 orders I made were in testing after a day or so, so this is making me worried.

You can find a chart about Card performance here at Toms

In short it looks like this for the Cards in question:

3d Mark comparison with the same computer hardware

GF4 TI4600 = 9889
GF4 TI4400 = 9486
GF4 TI4200 = 8882
ATI R8500 = 8414
GF3 TI 500 = 7783
GF4 MX460 = 6139
GF4 MX440 = 5653
GF 2 GTS = 4312

Basicaly it means this... if you use the MX card in a extra computer that will get used for occasional gaming while a friend is over it is more then adequate. If you use it as your primary computer spend the extra money and get the 4200.

Hope that helps.

Actually that doesn't help much. The GF4 MX 420 is different than the 460 and 440 in more than just core clock speed, meaning you can't just scale down the score from 440 and 460 speeds.

The memory on the 420 is only SDR SDRAM at 166MHz instead of DDR SDRAM @ 400/550 like on the 460 and 440. Total bandwidth on the MX 420 is only 2.6GHz, about the same as a GF2 MX. But the GF4 MX has bandwidth saving features (z-compression, fast Z clear, MSAA, HSR) and a more efficient memory controller than the GF2 MX. The GF4 MX 420 will easily outrun the GF2 MX, but it's not as fast as a GF3 Ti200 at stock speed. On average, it's pretty close to the performance of the Radeon 7500 (@ 290/470) without FSAA or anisotropic enabled. That's not too shabby for a SDRAM card.

You need to get out more.

The saturation of people flipping these dell systems, both online and local is horrible. I had some PC stuff to sell and there's just no real buyer left willing to pay market rate.

You're all bastards. :disgust:

Actually, if you wait about a month or so, all the people who wanted to make a quick buck will have moved all their computers and you can pick up the extra X-mas sales. I know eBay is getting their fair share of 4550's and people are making maybe $200 a system but that will pass soon.

Apparently, DELL purged the system and cleared out everyone's cart.
The GAME is OVER gang. Congrats to those who got the deal of the FALL. For those who missed out, X-mas is coming and DELL will have another bargain shortly before.

I wonder what Dell's strategy was (is) with all this market flooding. Their margins can't be good with the flat panel deals. It will be interesting to see if this returns anytime soon.

so...

1. is mx400 better or worse than ti4200?
2. is ti4200 better or worse than radeon 8500?

are the performace difference marginal?

if i want to swap out the cheapo harddrive shipped with the system, what is the best approach?

1. does xp has an image backup utility that i can create and put it on the new drive?
2. what are some good 3rd party backup image software?

appreciate any feedback.

1. is mx400 better or worse than ti4200?

Worse. It's easy to overclock a ti4200 to near ti4600 speeds.

2. is ti4200 better or worse than radeon 8500?

Better.

are the performace difference marginal?

No.

if i want to swap out the cheapo harddrive shipped with the system, what is the best approach?

Total reinstall is healthiest.

1. does xp has an image backup utility that i can create and put it on the new drive?

No. XP's not thrilled with being manipulated, but you can do so with Norton ghost, drive image pro, etc.

2. what are some good 3rd party backup image software?

Oops. See above.

I received an "order acknowledgment" email within 10 minutes of placing order and then an "order confirmation"
email during the day (probably within a couple hours or so).

But, when I goto Dell and sign in to check my past orders, nothing will show.
I need to find the screen to enter customer & order number and then it will show.

If you didn't get your emails, then you better go get yourself another 12 pack!! ;)

I was able to get in on this deal probably about 2 minutes before they changed the prices. I was going to order when I got home from work, but decided to go ahead and order them this afternoon. I'm glad I did since when I looked back on the forums here it said the deal was dead. I was like what the hell, so I went and looked back and the dell system page for the 4550 and sure enough it had changed. I was sweating until I finally recieved my final confirmation.

One thing of note, the free LCD upgrade was supposed to expire at midnight on the 23rd. At least that is what it had said when I looked at it. I went to the Dell Home site , and a new pop up came up that said the free LCD deal expired at 11 PM Central . Did anyone else notice when this deal was "supposed " to expire?

I find it rather odd that the deal would end in the middle of the afternoon like this. I'm glad I got in, but it freaked me out a bit since 10 minutes would have made about a 550 dollar difference.

As far as I had read, all deals ended on midnight of the 23rd, I guess they most have been subject to change at dell's disgression.

seaning - This deal definitely ended before it should have but Dell deals have always expired at 11 PM CST in the past (9 PM PST or 12 Midnight EST).
