Not to mention the amount of change the game has gone through in case you ever run into some of the old rules such as the pain is the ass banding used to be. 😉

They're actually relaunching the core set this summer as "Magic 2010" in a hope to make it simpler. Also mana burn is going away.

I can count on one hand the amount of times when I played that mana burn actually happened.

I must have either played more than you or seen people with different play styles... and that's not counting people that mana burn themselves to deny you the satisfaction of a killing blow 😛

My favorite thing to do!

Mine only took about a week to get here. Registered my fiance as well b/c I thought I was only getting one deck each...turns out they send (2) decks, so I got (4) decks! I wanted the fiance' to try it and she likes it so, maybe something to pass time here and there since i'm no longer an avid player like I used to be.

Got mine the other day. Don't know anything about Magic, but I have a few friends who used to play in high school, so I'll have to get a game going with them sometime. My decks are green and black.

Where exactly do I have to go for the free cards? I can't find the link.

EDIT: Seems like I saw this too late. 🙁

As did I.

PS to those who did get the decks, any decent cards or rares?

Everything I read about last time they did this (December?) stated that people received lands, commons, and uncommons. Makes sense for a freebie just to try and get people into the game 😛
I haven't had a chance to look through mine yet, but I got blue and white this time (blue and black last time).

How do you know how rare something is?

These are half decks they're sending out, thirty cards. Twelve of them are lands. The minimum deck size used to be forty cards, IIRC, don't know if that's changed.

Card guides list a card's rarity. When you go out and buy a deck or booster sets, there's pretty much always a set distribution of commons, uncommons, and rares.

Actually they make it much easier than that. All cards come from a "Set" and all sets have an icon. When looking at the card, the set's icon is right below the bottom right corner of the picture. Commons have a black icon, Uncommons have a silver Icon, Rares have a Gold icon, and Mythic Rares have a Bronze icon.

Boosters have 15 cards:
1 Rare
3 Uncommons
11 Commons

1/8 boosters replace the rare w/ a Mythic Rare.

Huh... admittedly, I haven't bought any cards since 1998, so I don't know when they started doing that.

It doesn't count if you do that. 😉

I played for a long time and it rarely happens on purpose in a actual game short of a few cards when I played but who knows what kind of crap they have now.

Nah the reason they got rid of it was it really wasn't an often used rule and could be confusing to new players. When it comes into play are cards that say like "tap to add 1 mana for each elf in play" Which can be a lot of mana, but it could be too much and you can't spend it all and have to mana burn.

Well when I used to play, just as 2nd edition was about to end and awhile before 4th edition was released, the only card I remember that caused mana burn often enough was the one that doubled the amount of mana each land produced when you tapped it.

dual lands ftw!

anyone remember those? 😀

I got a few since 2nd edition was just ending and they were still available on the cheap side.

They are probably still with my collection collecting dust.

I did a sw mini questioneer either late last year or early this year and got 2 packs of these magic cards in return instead of any sw minis.

PLEASE don't post in relatively old threads like this, just start a new thread. It's VERY annoying to other members and makes you look bad, especially if it's your first post.

MTG cards can be bought at Walmart and most other major retailers, but your local sport card shop or collectibles store will probably have better prices, and of course if you say buy a booster box of 36 packs you'll get even better prices.

Thanks and enjoy your time on forums.anandtech.com

Where do i click to get a free MTG deck?

Well, you know, this thread was created on 11-16-08. I'm not entirely sure where to click, either. I mean, could it be possible that the contest ended a long time ago? Nah, I don't think so. I still think it's still going on but I just don't know where to click. If you do find out where to click, please do tell me. Don't mind the post that I made earlier in the thread about a year ago. That was not me at all. That was just a clone of me.

Blue & White for me. Haven't played in YEARS, and damn these cards are overpowered as compared to my old 4th edition ones. Geez, I'm surprised they don't have a card that you pay one mana and you win the game.

Actually, they do (really).

Ive got over 10,000 cards (maybe more?)...but havnt played in at least a year. Funny thing is, no matter how good the new cards get, its the old cards that kick the most arse. Like a good ol' counterspell.

Edit: WOOO GO MTGO!
