Yes, you need a wireless BASE/access point to send out the signal to the adapter.

Think of this wireless USB adapter as a wired network card and the wireless access point as a network hub...you need BOTH for the network to function (ok, I know that's not ENTIRELY accurate to say you "need both" but you guys get the point of the analogy).

Before everyone gets TOO excited, do a quick google groups search on the nics model number.
Initial results are 64 bit weo, no xp support, and most importantly they are pretty much out of the networking business. Forget about support, and I would feel a lack of confidence about getting the rebate.

I'm with Scott on this one...it's hard enough trying to get a rebate from a REAL company. I can only imagine the horror stories that will arise from these guys!

Of course, if it works out, congrats to you guys--its a GREAT deal! :) Best of luck!

Check out the website on the rebate coupon: www.rebatestatus.com. Maybe it's only temporary, but when I try to load it I get "This site is currently unavailable due to technical difficulties." That doesn't give me a lot of confidence that the rebate is going to come through.

I just finished a review on this thing on Amazon.com. I've had this adapter for about a month so I'll let you guys in on the details. The wireless adapter had no Xp drivers, but the Windows 2000 ones work fine for the most part. My apartment complex that I'm living in for the summer has some horrible wireless broadband setup which is the only reason I got one. The reception is not that spectacular. The acccess point is in my living room (literally) and the signal strength usually hovers around 40% in my room. I've been searching for Windows XP drivers, as the manufacturer's site has them listed, but the link is broken. It turns out that the manufactuer doesn't support their stuff anymore but I'm convinced that Windows XP drivers exist somewhere. I don't know if it's a rebadged D-Link. Would be cool if it was; For 5 dollars it's worth it.

This is just my experience. I'm convinced that the product would work better on a WAP that doens't have a lot of traffic, but I can't test this out to be sure. Hope this helps.

Most of these no-name companies just run rebate promotions and never send them out. $5 is nothing, but I'd be kinda pissed about losing $40 and the hassle of trying to get my F***ing rebate!

However, I am tempted...can ALWAYS use another wireless card..........DAMN THEM FOR MAKING THIS DECISION SO HARD! Someone CONVINCE ME! :)

"Addtron" has been around for quite some time, I have some old 10Mb stuff with their name on it. (I don't know if they actually make their products or not, probably 99% of the stuff in this biz is re-labeled, made by some far-eastern company that you couldn't pronounce the name of even if you wanted to. LinkSys and D-Link are the same way.)

addtron is a manufacturer of network stuff. if you look on practicallynetworked.com they are the original manufacturer for other companies. i checked out the netgear, and it looks like the same card.

Missed this one :(

I already have a wireless network, but for $5, I'm sure I could have found a use for this :D

If/when I do receive this, how do I know if it's a rebadged Netgear or other brand?

Do you just randomly pick firmware's and start installing them?

Amazon has a bunch of software titles at $10 (and some at $20 or $30) all with $10 rebates. So those could be used for free shipping. I'm sure there's a thread here or elsewhere about it. If you go to amazon.com go to electronics and then software and look for like a 1001 offer.

I have 4 of these in use now...they work great and all of them are on XP Pro machines. I can't complain one bit about their performance.

Nope, mine's waiting at my friends house and I'll probably pick it up along with my other Hot Deal goodies later this week. I don't have a 802.11b router/AP I can still flash this though, right, does it do everything via USB?

First impression is great, I have it installed in XP Pro and have 128bit encryption running. 128 looks to be fully supported. I will try this with my laptop/cisco pcmcia later today.

Hi Herr Yunta, mine won't be delivered until later today. Sounds good, does it support 128-bit right off the bat or did you have to flash the new firmware ? Where did you get the XP drivers or are you using the win2k one ? Thanks in advance.

Nikepete...I used the Win2K drivers that were supplied on the disk for my XP Pro system.
