Dead Explorer engine =/

As a follow up here..

Turns out the engine is dead and will need replacing =/

Can someone explain to me how this works and what my options are..e.g. used engine, new engine, selling the car..

I have absolutely no idea what this will encompass, and want to know how much I might get for a dead 2002 Explorer, and how much an engine replacement will cost.

Ok so your blew a headgasket and overheated the truck?
Your cheapest option is to take off the head with the blown gasket, have it magnafluxed, and then shaved or replaced.

Did your mechanic tell you that you needed other work done than that?

He was going to do that initially, but upon further observation it looks like the engine is completely dead.

Dead how? Are the rod or crank bearings damaged?

For a vehicle that new your best bet would be to find a low-mileage engine from a wreck in a junkyard and have your mechanic do an engine swap. And don't buy the first engine you find. Shop around ALL of the junkyards in your area and get them to compete with each other to get the best deal. This is usually a lot cheaper than having the engine you have rebuilt or buying a new/rebuilt engine.

P.S.: Whatever you do DO NOT sell the Explorer with the blown engine in it. You won't get squat for it.

Pistons probably expanded and scored the cylinder walls if it overheated. If it's an aluminum block who knows what else is messed up. Cheaper to just replace the engine with a low mileage used long block considering the labor would be the same, minus all the machine work and engine assembly.
