Dead ethernet card?

i have a pc that was working just fine but all of a sudden it does not want to connect to the internet nor the family network.

is it common for the ethernet to go out on the motherboard or a pci card?

Reset the router/hub/switch the NIC is connected to by unplugging the power, might just be a hiccup.. NICs don't just die.

You might try resetting the modem also. Sometimes I have to reset the cable modem, then the router, then sometimes restart the computer. It can be quirky sometimes, but I've never had my onboard ethernet just go out.

i resetted the modem and router. the computer is sending less than 50 packets but receiving nothing. does that help any?

dont know what else could be wrong.

suggestions?

Try run>cmd and enter

ping localhost -L 1500

This will ping the NIC with 1500 byte packets for you. If you get timeouts or packet loss I would swap the card.

While not common, onboard nic's do fail. I've run into a handful of them. Most were out of warranty and we just stick a network card in them and turned the onboard off.

Try checking for cable damage too. I had that problem and thought it was the NIC, but in reality, my mom was cleaning in the house and damaged one of the cables inside the Cat5 cable by rolling over the cable with a dresser.

also check for spy ware... i dont know if you guys seen or not.. some spyware open a lot of fricken ports.. makes it look like internet is not working.. boot into safe mode with networking and see if its the same.. otherwise replace like suggested
