Dead Ethernet Card?

i have a pc that worked just fine but now it does not want to connect to the internet nor access the family network.

is it common for the ethernet port on the motherboard to just go out?

Common enough to say that it isn't surprising. It isnt an everyday occurance though.

How old is it? The older it is, the more likely it is to go out. I've got a 4yr old Linksys nic that has been giving me fits lately...it needs replacing.

Have you tried to reinstall the drivers? It might be software problem not hardware. What does ipconfig show? Have you scanned for virus or spyware lately?

The early crop of On Mobo NICs are not the best in the world, there is more trouble with than with regular PCI.

You did not explain why you think it is an NIC, it might be something else as well.

In any case PCI NICs go for $5 it is a good idea to have one as spare no matter what.

:sun:

I have never seen a NIC die on it's own, infact the one in this machine here is an original "Digital Equipment Corporation DE500B Fast Ethernet" card and it's probably 10 years or more old.

1 of my 3 have died, a dlink. I've also had ports on a dlink switch, and a linksys router and wifi, while not die, they "broke" and performance fell way down forcing me to use other ports. So yea I've had plenty of big and small breaks in my wired network in my life.
