yeah do that...if you're a moron. Or go buy it on ebay (brand new) right now for $850-$900

lol you call me a moron? Your the moron for spending over $100 more than I would.... A hot deal you can get a new one from Dell with a warrenty for as low as $720 like two days ago. The one you buy on ebay for 850 -900 isn't going to have its warrenty. so STFU before you go an call me a moron, idtiot. You should be banned.

Don't buy an LCD so big that you can't run your games at the native resolution. Your 9600XT will roll over and die at the resolution of a $400 LCD much less an $800 one. Fire up the games you play at 1600x1200 and tell me if they're playable. The Dell 2005fpw is something like 1680x1050 and the 2405fpw is 1920x1200. Anything less than a 16 pipeline card is going to struggle greatly in games from the last 2 years on a high end LCD. You could of course run the games stretched, but that's going to look like crap. This is the last real reason to get a CRT, that and you can get gigantic great screens dirt cheap these days. I got a 21" Sony P520 (Dell branded) for $240 shipped a little while back, yeah it's heavy and big but it looks great and I can run HL2 at 1600x1200 or FEAR at 1024x768. If you're going to get an LCD, pick up at least a $250 x800XL to go with it.

I see some more of those monster sony 24" wide screen CRTs are up for auction again...I don't know if I could handle that. My desk is heavy duty but just having to deal with moving it around...the necessity of having someone here to help me move it...

Most (all?) the hig resolution LCDs I've seen and tested (19x12) range all support 1:1 signal scaling. You could buy a 19" LCD that runs 12x10 natively, or a Dell 2005FPW (or a 2405FPW) that supports that resolution cropped. I think on the 2405FPW running 12x10 would probably be about the same size as a 19" screen anyway.

It is attractive on price for the HP / Sony beasts. Only downside is their size and weight.
This is sure a tough decision. I never know if and when a Dell deal will show up, and if it does, will it be the best that can be and will I catch it before it expires 🙂

I realize you can do 1:1 scaling, but I still think it makes a lot more sense for a gamer to spend a few hundred dollars on a good graphics card and pair it with a 20 inch LCD than to spend $900 on a 2405fpw and play your games on half the screen because you have a graphics card worth $70. This is especially true if you're a jobless student and can't afford to upgrade graphics cards reguarly.

Really? They are on mine.

I wouldn't buy an expensive lcd now. Windows Vista is not far off and it may render all existing monitors useless for watching HD movies.

buy it off ebay and you can never return it for bad pixels... buy it off dell and expect to return and exchange for a perfect pixel one.

DELL QUALITY ASSURANCE suck balls.

Also I dont think HD has any effect on the monitor, as far as LCDs are concerned. Isnt it in relation to the video card. If the video card can receive the HD signals and process them the display unit should be able to display it.

I just bought the 24" Sony / HP CRT from the same seller that JRW got his Sony from for $225+$100 shipping +$10 insurance.
I was tempted to get two but ....breathe...don't go overboard 🙂
I have the room and the sturdy V corner desk. I emailed him yesterday with questions but I just had to get one 🙂
It's cheap, its large, and for only around $30 you can buy an extra warranty apparently through the link they have.
Now see my question in another thread about ATI clearance store refurb if that will work well with these resolutions.
Thanks for the help.

I think the plan is for all next gen dvds (blu-ray/hd-dvd) to be encrypted, and the decryption happens in the monitor, not the video card. So any monitor that doesn't have the decryption circuits won't be able to play those movies. This may also be the case with HD cable TV.

I would venture that DRM conversions will be made available. Forcing people to buy new hardware is assinine, although not hard to put past MS.

Unfortunely, its not really MS pushing it...

Its far far worse

the MPAA.

MPAA forces Blu-Ray and HD-DVD to beef up content protection in all forms.

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD support forces MS to support this content protection in Window Vista.

I could even see this being released as a patch to XP or something (since I assume Blu-Ray or HD-DVD drives will make PC before Vista is released)

I think you may also be required to have a Video Card that passes along the HDCP info...

I would like to have a display that can grow with me. I assume Excel will play a good role in my future IT work. I haven't had much training on it yet though, just one basic class.

There is one seemingly normal auction that ends tonight. Currently it is in the upper $700 with shipping range. They only have one feedback score though.

Dude, there are MANY ebay listings for BRAND NEW IN SEALED BOX (NEVER OPENED) Dell UltraShrp 2405fpw. You sould be looking only at BUY-IT-NOW listings from power sellers or people with a lot of feedback, preferably recent feedback from other people that also bought an expensive item from them. Skip and/or ignore any suspicious listings, or listings from people with less then 50 feedback score in last 6 months.

Here's one reputable-looking listing for $770 plus $100 shipping:

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Dell-2405FPW-24...34QQcategoryZ86706QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Also forget about auctions. Those usually end up more expensive, and are offered by inexperienced sellers. Most professional sellers have only buy-it-now listings.
