I actually ordered a 4400 from the refurb section. At any rate, mine only came with a black cd-rom drive. Did anyone order one that does not want their black cdrw drive? If so, please PM me.

If not, where's a good place to get a cheap Black Internal CDRW drive? I'm afraid any kind of white would look terrible in it.

I do have to say, however, that I LOVE the 4400 case design. It really is cool!

Is anyone selling their modem or NIC? If so, let me know how much you want for them?

<< If he bought the $449 system like all the other sheep he probably got the 5400RPM. I would have sprung the extra $40 and gotten the 40GB 7200RPM hard drive instead of the K-Mart special 20GB Value Hard Drive. >>

What are you talking about Rossman? The upgrade to the 40 GB hdd was only $20. Besides, I believe that the 20 gb hdd was a 7200 RPM drive as well. It just doesn't make any sense to put a slow 5400 RPM drive on a P4 1.6 GHz system with DDR RAM.

Anyway.. My purpose of this post was to let you guys in on something interesting that I just found posted on t#chbargains. They were talking about how the Dell 4400 series with the Maxtor drives come shipped with the hdd's set to the quietest, i.e., slowest setting for the acoustic management.

Now.. I have a Maxtor 40 GB 7200 RPM drive already and I've messed around with the acoustical management. What I found is that even setting it to the medium setting slowed the drive down quit a bit and at the slowest setting it was noticeably slower and not much quieter. So.. This would definitely be worth looking into.

Here's the link to Maxtor's utilities page. I believe the correct download is the SETACM.EXE to set the AMSET.
I decided to sell my system, so I haven't had a chance to open it up and test it. If anyone does mess with the acoustical management on their hard drive please let me know what it was set to from Dell. The interesting thing about this is that Dell supposedly has it set to the quietest (slowest) setting and if you buy it OEM, it is set to the fastest (loudest) setting. Like I said, I have a Maxtor drive set to the loudest setting and it is by no means loud. The hit in performance is not worth any of the quietness that this feature provides IMO.

HTH..

Important update (posted to FW too):

Just emailed Dell CSR to verify my rebate would work. I'm looking to get the $200 since my order date was 3/2/2002. CSR said that I am not eligible for the rebate (either one), since my order did not include a monitor. What gives? Neither of the rebate forms stated that they required a monitor purchase.

Just a heads up for AT members that jumped on this deal. Email/call CSR and see what they say. Might be in for a bit of a fight.

Let's see what happens. If Dell decides to screw with us, this would be a tasty class action lawsuit. I might even take it myself.

I just contacted a CSR that I've been in contact with. I called him initially because my system was shipped to my business name even though I ordered it with my personal credit card and info. The rebate said something about not accepting a purchase from a group and I wanted him to clarify it for me.

Anyway.. I fired off an email directly to him and I should find out for sure if the rebate is good or not. If not, I'm cancelling my auction and telling Dell where they can stuff it. Dude.. You're gettiing your Dell back.

Anyone else disappointed with the performance of these systems? I bought 3 of 'em and have been shocked at the sluggish Windows performance. I've got 512MB and all the Windows dazzle stuff turned off and still the systems are seriously sluggish compared to my basic P350/W2K system, dramatically slower than my Athlon1000/XP system, and painfully slow compared to my P1.8/RDRAM/IDE-RAID0 system. I don't get it? How could this system be so slow? I expected it to perform nearly as well as my P1.8/RAID system at least for basic operations.

B.T.W. I already corrected a few deficiencies: The hard drives were all set to "quiet" mode, Setting them to "fast" bumped the Sandra score a few thousand points. All Sandra scores are now on par with the hardware except for some reason the HDD score varies wildly from 12K-17K on repeated tests. The NIC's are running at 100-full duplex through my switch but performance is what I'd expect from a 10BT card on a shared hub, yes 10 base. My old 3COM fixed that.

B.B.T.W. 2 of my 3 systems included the Intellimouse Explorer! All three included 16X burn-proof drives!

Finally, for anyone else wanting to set their drive to fast, the above utility must be run from a boot disk and the "off" option is much noisier and slower than the fast option in my experience. The noise differences are only evident on seeks of course, not idle noise.

I checked my rebate on www.rebatestatus.com and it doesn't show up.
Maybe I need to give it time...I hope. It was sent in 10 days ago.

I didn't get the double memory, so I would qualify for the rebate.
You don't qualify because of such and such and this and that.

This will be fun waiting for the rebate and wondering if Dell will honor it without the monitor.
The old, well we didn't state it in the rebate, but that is what we meant by "qualified" 4400 system.

I just got off the phone with Dell Customer Support. The rep was quite sure that you need only purchase the tower to get the rebate. The form itself lends support to this idea as it only references the model 4400 and says nothing about a monitor. The customer service rep was quite sure on this issue.

Remember it takes a minimum of 8 weeks to process.

I just got a message back from the Dell CSR that I've been talking to as well. He said that I should have no problems with the rebate because it makes no mention of a monitor. If you get denied the rebate for some reason, I'll disclose this guys information because he said that he'd have Dell cut a check for me if I didn't get the rebate in my instance.

In case you don't remember, my system showed up as being sold to my old company name instead of me even though I provided my personal credit card info. My question was if I'd get my rebate if I put my name on the rebate form instead of the company name. Also, the rebate form said something about the rebate being invalid if sold to a group. Company comes to mind when I see the word group.

Anyway.. I don't want to give this guys email out unless it's totally necessary. I don't want to swamp the poor guy. If you don't get your rebate, I'll give you his information.

Hope this works, trying to post this morning was a mess. Zuni thinks he's figured it out now. Board is still slow though.

I'm satisfied with the speed of mine, but not its quality. It has already needed a new motherboard and a new fan. Getting them was about as much of a pain in the ass as you might imagine. The way it all fits together without screws is nifty, but this is the first and last dell I buy. Back to do-it-yourself! (but who could pass this up?)

I'm one of those who called to change their system config and got a new order date. My rebate status shows that my $200 rebate is being processed... fingers crossed.
