I didn't expect to get the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer Optical mouse, but that is what mine came with. I have enough optical mice. Anyone want this mouse for $25 + shipping?

god1father, yeah I'll take it if you ship it to me first, then I'll send you a money order. Burner, software for 30 plus shipping. Check my heatware link.

I just got mine and the Dell dude was on Leno last night. Weird coincidence, considering that I was flipping channels and he was there..

Anyway.. I have two questions.

First of all, for the rebate, do you send in the packing slip on the outside of the box?

In the separate speaker box, is there another speaker box inside of the plain brown box or is the brown box it? I wanted to know because I'm considering selling these and if there is no internal box, I'd like to keep them sealed.

Thanks

Sal

So.. I'm assuming that there is only one box with the speakers? They are just plain brown boxed then. No fancy inside manufacturers box? That's good to know because if I sell them, I don't want to open the box because then the speakers won't be sealed any longer.

Still waiting on the confirmation concerning the rebate. The rebate form says the packing slip inside of the pc box and I'm wondering if they mean the packing slip that was in the pouch on the outside of the box? I'm entertaining the thought of selling this thing, but I would like to get the rebate as well. Anyone know for sure?

Sorry, forgot to turn on my PM yesterday.

Anyone want the 8x4x32 CD-RW or software (WinXP Home full, Works suite 2002, Quicken+TurboTax 2002 Deluxe,
DELL drivers/utilities/applications), you can PM me now.

Ok.. Let me ask this question another way..

What is everyone sending in as a packing slip for their rebates? Are they sending in a packing slip from inside of the box or the one from the little plastic pouch on the outside of the box?

I'm wondering if I would still get the rebate even if I were to sell this pc. The transfer of ownership would probably take place before the check was cut for the rebate. I'm wondering how that works?

Anyway.. If someone could please let me know what they are sending in for the MIR, it would be most appreciated!

Anybody else disappointed with the hard drive performance? I can't find a diagnostic program on the web to tell me if the HD is 5400 or 7200 RPM, but it sure pokes along like a 5400. My Thunderbird 800 mHz with 196 MB PC 133 RAM and a 7200 ATA-66 hard drive snaps so much faster than this computer.

Any ideas as to why the performance blows?

Salvador, the rebate form asks for "your system packing slip"Text and the form in the pouch on the side of the box says: THIS IS NOT AN INVOICE and then says in large type Packing Slip, so this is what I sent (after making a copy for my records).
Hope this helps.

<< Do you have the 20 Gb HD, or did you upgrade to the 40 Gb? >>

If he bought the $449 system like all the other sheep he probably got the 5400RPM. I would have sprung the extra $40 and gotten the 40GB 7200RPM hard drive instead of the K-Mart special 20GB Value Hard Drive.

SJSHAW, I upgraded to the 40 and on the packing slip it describes the drive as : 40GB ATA-100 7200 RPM. It seems to be fine, speedwise.

Sal, or anyone else who's wondering... the packing slip is definitely the one on the outside of the box in a little plastic pouch. As fas as i'm concerned there isnt even any other papers included that would indicate you bought the system except that one.

According to the Dell website the 20GB Ultra ATA/100 Hard Drive is in fact a 7200 rpm model.

The 5400 HD is only on the 2100, 4300S, SmartStep models. 😉

Thanks for the info on the packing slip. The packing slip in the little plastic pouch on the outside of the box is the one that I will send in for the rebate. I didn't know if there was anything inside the box that could be the packing slip and I didn't want to crack the box unless I had to.

I did spring for the 40 gb hdd. How's the performance on this one? Anybody care to look at the hdd and see who the manufacturer is or the model?

Thanks again,

Sal

well i dunno about u, i upgraded to 40 gb hdd and mine works pretty fast, comparable to my IBM 60gb 60GXP.

I dont think it was possible for anyone with a 4400 series dimension to get a 5400 rpm drive so if yours is really slow, u might wanna do some tests on it.

here's a link for proof that all of us should have 7200 ATA/100 rpm drives, regardless if u upgraded or not

Dell Hard drive Details

Yeah, I upgraded to the 40 gb drive and apparently got a 7200 RPM drive. The system is still poking along, though. Starting up Outlook and IE on my old machine took less than a second. The Dell takes about 2 secs for each.

Thanks for the info, guys.

Has anyone taken a look at their hard drives yet? Are they marked Dell or a brand name? When I bought my Dell 2100 with the 20 gb value hdd, it was a Maxtor ATA100 5400 RPM drive and was marked Maxtor.

Just wondering..

Sal

On my 2100, the extra set of drive rails were behind the front cover clipped onto the internal part of the case. Look for them.

XP can only be loaded on this machine. I found out on my 2100 system that the OS is locked to the BIOS on the motherboard. I was able to reload WinME from scratch on any hdd as long as it was in my 2100. I could not load WinME on the Dell hard drive in another system. This tells me that the OS is locked to the BIOS on the motherboard. If you ever upgrade the motherboard, you'll have to buy another OS.

Oh yeah.. Don't forget about Dell's proprietary power plugs on the PS and motherboard. If you ever want to upgrade either, you'll have to upgrade both or get some sort of fancy plug. I guess you'll burn your mobo and PS out if you don't swap both.

This is why I'm having second thoughts about keeping this system. I might be better off just selling it and then following through with the AMD XP system I had planned on building. You'll never do better than building yourself if you want the ultimate in flexibiltiy when it comes time to upgrade.

<< Anyone tried overclocking the 1.6 Ghz CPU ? What's the highest speed you can reach ? >>

Ok, my question is, how can you overclock ? I am completly new at overclocking, so if someone can provide a step by step method, that would be great.

I look at the MB and there are no jumpers to set on this one. Also, there is no setting in the BIOS where i can change the multiplier. Can someone provide me the info ?

Thanks

I betcha that this aint the machine to be looking to overclock knowing Dell. I could be wrong, but it is my guess that Dell locked out any way to overclock their computers. Don't believe me though because I'm not a very big overclocker anyway. I've only overclocked one machine and it was after someone told me what to do specifically for that machine.

You guys must not open your computers or care to respond. I'm still wondering if the hard drive on this thing is marked Dell or if it is a brand name hard drive like Maxtor or WD?

Anyway..

Sal

Are you guys sending in a copy of your packing slip or the original and keeping a copy for yourselves? The rebate form says packing slip toward the top and then toward the bottom of the page, it mentions copy.

Just let me know what you are doing?
