anybody knows how many memory slots this dude has? 4300 has 2 (yuk). I hope this one has three, so that two extra 256M DDR can be put in.

yes it allows 2nd drive. According to my 4300, it's not good to mount a 2nd HD though -- no air flow between two HDs if you do so, just way toooo tight. The heat can kill a 7200rpm HD eventually.

Thanks. Just printed 4 copies and stored it away until the system arrives.

Anyone who is wondering "is this a good deal, should I order this?"

Yes, read the review that uwannawhat posted.

Add Dell's exemplary build quality and good support -- and remarkably quiet operation; our 4400's cooling fans were nearly silent compared to some current desktops' -- and you've got an exceptionally tempting PC. In fact, you've got one of the best all-around deals we've ever seen.

This is what I love about my Dell Dimension, it's super silent easily upgradeable.

<< damn. i was hoping there was no 2nd drive bay...now i really have to decide >>

Why? I got in on the Dell 2100 system last August and one of my major peeves was that it didn't come with a second drive bay.

I think I might just pass this one up and build my AMD system. This is nice out of the box, but is going to be a pain when I go to upgrade in 6 months to a year. The problem is that Dell uses proprietary plugs on their power supply and motherboards, so you have to replace both if you want to upgrade one. In the case of my 2100 system, I wanted to swap cases to get the extra full size drive bay, but the 2100 case is a micro-atx layout with a full size power supply. So.. I would have to go with a Micro-atx case and then the power supply wouldn't fit or I would have to go to a full atx case and the motherboard wouldn't fit. Swapping the case, motherboard and power supply was just not a viable option for me.

Not to mention that when you buy a "full version" of an OS from Dell, you get the restore cd instead. I found out that I can wipe my hard drive clean and then completely reinstall as long as I'm using the same system BIOS, i.e., I can use the OS as long as I use it in this Dell system. If I would've swapped the motherboard, I would've lost the OS as well. Add to that the fact that XP has the WAP and it makes it almost necessary to buy another OS license if you want to upgrade later.

I think I'm going to skip the hassles this time and go ahead and build my AMD system. I'll get exactly what I want and if I want to upgrade my motherboard on a whim in a month, I can do it no problem. Wish I could say the same about this Dell system.

PS.. Thanks for the efforts Rossman, but that review sucks. Is the hard drive a 7200 rpm? How many RAM DIMM slots does the motherboard have? 4 PCI slots seems limiting? Is there space for a second hard drive?

PSS.. Dell makes it tougher for the guy that wants to buy 10 systems and resell them with this MIR. Do you think it's a good enough deal to pick up a few bucks by reselling on a certain auction site? 😉

If you downgrade to a DVD (subtract $30) the price gets even better. 🙂

I already have a CDRW so i really don't need it. Heck, if i could order a PC w/o the harddrive and dvd it'd be so much better. (I miss Cybermax, though they went bankrupt they allowed you to take out what you don't need)

<< mine comes out to be 519 before the rebate. It is too tempting ... >>

Subtract the 2% from eBates.com
Remember the FREE UPS Ground Shipping.
This is a very quiet system, you can hardly hear it.
A legal copy of Windows XP Home.
most importantly, "DUDE YOU GOT A DELL!"

Are you still thinking about it?

😀

So what's the deal on the pin count for the CPU on the motherboard? Maybe I missed it but none of the posts or the review on Hardware Central have answered that question. I asked a Dell sales rep and she said that it was 423 pin count and she asked the tech support but I still don't believe her or the tech support. Is it possible to find out at all without asking the sales rep who I have no faith in? I really hope it's 478 pin so we can upgrade to the Northwood later if we wanted to. If nobody knows the pin count for the CPU does anyone know which Intel motherboard is used? For what it's worth though, I checked Intel's website and all the motherboards that use the 845 chipset support the 478 pin CPUs. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

I think he just wanted a reason not to spend more money. 😛

I am IN, but when I called to remove the NIC and Modem, (I have plenty of those laying around) the CSR said he could, but it would not change the price overall becuase it changed the configuration ... HUH ! I am on hold now to try another CSR ! Expected Wait 15 mnutes -- come on AnandTech'ers, get off the dang lines !

Edit: 14 minutes later, NO GO again for me. Said he reconfigured it an dcame up same price 🙁 Anyone need a NIC or a Modem cheap 🙂

i ordered one with no monitor and no speaker for $547 final price after coupon, my question is can dell add to this price because i selected monsoon speakers option (subtract $30) but left the box unchecked on the speakers ($130) ?

Supachink

That should generate an error message from Dell. You can't pick the Monsoon option without choosing the Monsoon speakers that add $130.

I'll give you twice what Dell offered ;-)
