I recently got a message upon POST stating that my ac adapter was not fully functioning, and that I may not be able to charge my battery. I don't remember if my battery ran out of juice or stopped charging first. Frankly, I don't care to reconcile the chicken and the egg.
My friend has an identical model laptop, and can still use+charge his original battery. What harm, if any, could come from giving him my battery to try and charge over night?

I'd like to do this, bc the battery is a 'smart' one, so if I got a new shiny ac adapter, but the battery has a remaining charge less than the smart cell requires to initiate a charge cycle- I've just bought a new ac adapter, and now need a battery. Knowing both need to be replaced up front will likely sway me to look into a new laptop. But not if the battery can still charge.

If the laptop will run off of AC power (with dead battery or no battery) then it is just a battery issue. Buy a new battery...done.

If the unit will not run plugged in at all once the battery is depleted, then you have a bigger issue...more than likely the connection between the ac adapter input and the power supply / motherboard. Very unlikely, though not impossible, that the AC adapter itself has failed.

Bottom line, it will not hurt to charge your battery in another like model (or at least that use the same battery) laptop. It would also not hurt to plug your AC adapter into your friends laptop to see if you get the same message.

Remove the battery from your laptop. Connect A/C. Boot. If it runs off the A/C adapter with no bettery installed, it's a decent betthe adapter and laptop are OK.

It won't hurt to try the battery in a like machine. But! How old is it? If it is over 2 or 3 years old, it is probably on its last legs and should be replaced.

Push the battery level indicator button. If it gives you a flash code chances are it is bad though I bet it is your power jack on the motherboard that has a bad connection.

Does the LED on the power brick light up?
