Not too bad of a price if you ask me. Double your hard drive to 80GB for $10 more. You'll need to take off the $30 they're charging you for a floppy drive to get the price of $249. This is a great price plus it's free shipping too. Mine came out to $267 including NC taxes.

[*]Celeron 2.53Ghz 256K Cache
[*]512MB RAM
[*]40GB 7200RPM HD
[*]Gigabit ethernet
[*]No operating system
[*]Embedded graphics (I don't believe it has an AGP slot either)
[*]$249 + taxes and free shipping

edit: Is it SC420 or 420SC? I put both in just in case someone does a search for one or the other.
edit: It looks like they've lowered the savings from $250 to $225. This means you get the machine for $274 instead of $249.
edit: Deal is dead.

you know, I must have been living in a cave or something for the past couple years. This is the first time I've heard of PCIe slots. When did this stuff start coming out? I'm spending too much time in ATOT...

great deal for a low budget system, file server, render farm, etc. I was wondering the same thing about PCIe on these. $259 + tax with the 80gb drive. none of the other upgrades are worth it.

Graphics cards use a PCIe X16 slot and this server doesn't have one. Someone here did mod the connector to fit a video card into the PCIe X8 slot. Sounds risky to me, but it might work.

yup, sounds like he cut out a part of the divider on that slot. Since the whole PC is only $250 what do you have to lose if you try it? Just take a Dremel and go for it. I, on the other hand, am a cheap bastard and the Celery and integrated video is fine for me 😛

It's almost worth buying the machine to have a modded PCIe slot :cookie:

Hot,
The CPU is $84 at newegg
2 X 256MB DDR2 = $178
80GB SATA hard drive = $63
This = $325 for these parts

The last good 400SC for $298 AR offered a P4 instead of Celeron.

We got one with a P4 2.8 GHz, 800 FSB & only 128 MB RAM for $348 shipped. Swapped out the RAM for a 512 MB stick and haven't looked back. A VERY quiet machine--wish I had another.

PS: Send me a msg if you wanna buy that 128 MB stick! 🙂

How much do you think I can get for my 512MB ECC?

Was wondering the exact same thing...

I know that the SC400s were quiet but the SC420s?

Is there a SC420s FAQ?

Didn't have any money when the last SC400 deal was going on but now I'm looking to buying one of these systems to set it up as a server.

1600SC

wow the 1600sc is HOT! it comes with a free quadruple upgrade to a gig of memory with a xeon processor for 499! WTF!

....and SCSI

however I think the 420 SC is the faster platform if you want a pc

for server duties the 1600sc is a STEAL

HAHAHAHA you're better off buying a whole seccond 1600SC than buying a 2nd processor. Now that's funny.

I did some searching at support.dell.com. It appears that the 1600 and 1750 are extremely loud. The posts over there make the things sound so loud that putting them in another room isn't good enough!

The 400SC was almost silent.

Would be hotter if it came with a faster xeon cpu. How old is the 2.4ghz 533mhz now? Upgrade to the 3.06Ghz 533mhz is $199, kinda blows the deal.
