Lemee see if I can word this right . . .

I'm bummed . . .
I didn't get any stackable coupons yesterday even though I've gotten them before and been signed up for a quite while . . .
Any ideas of something I can do on their site or with my account with Dell that might just cause those emails to kick out to me?? I called a salesperson and he said he couldn't do anything . . . erg

Had the thing in my cart for a couple days hoping for the email but it never came :(
suggestions??

Have you purchased from SBS anytime soon? These coupons would be for SBS only. IF you are signed up for home or havent purchased anything in a long time, you probably won't be getting it? Maybe sign up on another account or something? I was lucky enough to have 2 accounts signed up for 2 codes. One was business related and the other is person SBS related, so i got two codes.

I purchased a couple of SBS systems just a few months ago, and have remembered getting a couple of codes since but none over the past month it appears?? (I haven't paid attention for the past month or so anyway till a few days ago)

I'll try signing up another account I suppose with another of our domain names . . .
Prec the suggest :)

No problem. I've got two systems on order right now. I was able to order the Exact same configuration, but 20 dollars cheaper for some damn reason. So I guess I have to cancel one :D

I downloaded the service manual for the 600SC from Dell and here's what it says about memory:

"A minimum of 128 MB of ECC PC-1600/2100 DDR SDRAM memory or DDR-200/266 SDRAM memory, upgradable to a maximum of 4 GB by installing 128-, 256-, 512-MB, or 1-GB registered memory modules in the four memory module sockets on the system board."

I'm assuming the 400Mhz fsb Celeron uses PC-1600, while the 533Mhz fsb P4 uses PC-2100. Also assuming Dell, in the interest of volume purchasing, is installing PC-2100 in all the 600SC boxes, Celeron and P4. Could be wrong about that, though.

So, I'm planning on ordering some Kingston PC2100 DDR from newegg.com:

$33 + 6 shipping : 128MB DDR PC 2100 ECC Registered - KVR266X72RC25/128
$59 + 6 shipping : 256MB DDR PC 2100 ECC Registered - KVR266X72RC25/256

Or Crucial:

$65 + free shipping: 256MB DDR PC 2100 ECC Registered - CT3272Y265

I'll probably just get a 128MB stick to go with the 128MB mine already has; it's for a store server (my parent's comic book store!) that handles cash register transactions and it's not a heavy load.

Also, if your order some memory from newegg.com you can buy Win2k Pro full version oem (same as retail box but no box) for $145 oem, or XP Home full version oem for $93. Any reason the Pro/Home versions (instead of Server/Pro) wouldn't work on the 600SC?

Soupwizard

Can anybody that has one of these comment on the installed RAM speed on the Celeron box? It would be nice to have comfirmation of the speed...and thanks for the info...very helpful

Yea, I tried that, but only had one coupon...sol on the new order, so I just added 2 more boxes to my original order. Dell is honoring the coupons for all three....sweet buy...

Dell's web site seems a little hosed at the moment, I couldn't find any tech info on the 600SC today (like I did yesterday). I was able to find it eventually by going through Dell Canada, so here's a direct link to the tech docs for the 600SC:

Link to Dell's PE600SC Tech Docs

Update: if you click on the "Download" tab on the above link, it will take you to the drivers download section for the 600SC.

In my case, I need to order my memory from newegg so that I can buy the oem (discounted) version of Win 2k Pro from newegg; the oem software needs to be bought with "hardware", and memory counts as hardware.

Hmmm, is this for your server??? Linux makes a great file server... Web server... XP/2000 won't even know it was a unix server dishing out files. I can see your good deed to support Microsoft. But.....

That's all I am gonna say about that... :)

For all you folks itchen for a review of the 600SC... I found this...

Tho it's a 1.7 celeron. So I am sure our 1.8 Cel's will blow this away. Anyway... It's a pretty good review with lots of pictures.

Looks like it has WD HD's and Micron RAM.

LINKY

Best part about the review...

This machine is quiet and has been completely stable for me. Keyword here is QUIET! :)

Well, it's also running point-of-sale software in the back office of a store, so unfortunetly I have to spend the $$$ to run Windows. If it was my own box I'd run FreeBSD on it, especially since the review above (thanks ericlp!) notes that the bios has an option to send power-on console messages to the serial port! This box is designed to be able to run headless.

Anybody have any idea what kind of drives are these 36GB and 73GB SCSI drives? Maxtor? Seagate? Fujitsu? IBM?

This is probably a silly question for the techies of server iron, but here goes anyways:

Who makes the motherboard for the 600SC? Are Serverworks boards all made by Intel or is it just like desktop chipsets, where (almost) anyone can license
the chipsets from the company and make a board?

I ask because I may see if I can sell the board on Ebay, keeping everything else, and transform it into a desktop machine.

i really dont think intel makes the board useing someone elses chipset. I know asus makes serverworks chipset boards that came in the gateway server deal a while back. and other companies that make server boards IE. tyan.

I called our Dell CSR that services the company I work for. The reason for the shipping delay is that the BIOS needed rewriting. His best estimate is 6 more days before they begin putting this computer in production. That is the earliest estimate. So...I believe the delay and I believe that we are not going to get our computers for awhile, but the BIOS re-write sounds....I don't know. Since there is going to be a backup we will not see our computers for a long while.

Mine was in the "In Production" phase (with no status for kitting, etc) for almost 7 days (ordered on the 24th). After "kitting" started in the early afternoon yesterday, it shipped out via FedEx before the night was over.

I doubt that it is an Intel board, but Intel does use ServerWorks chipsets in some of their boards. For instance, Intel doesn't make a chipset that supports 4-way Xeon MPs; they rely on ServerWorks for that.

Edit: Awesome, I posted in the wrong thread (I ordered the 1600SC).
