Since I'm on a budget, (it'll be his B-day present), would this be a good bargain in general? What are the chances that even before this system ships, I'll find something better? Thanks everyone.

If you are on a budget, you are really overpaying a bit over yesterday's deal (unless he has to have a DVD burner and 1Gb of memory). So, you might want to look at knightc2's link and bump it up to a 17" LCD. That will save you $60 (+tax) over my deal and ony "cost" you a downgrade to a 17" LCD for missing yesterday's deal. Whether the smaller LCD, lack of a RW drive and half the memory is worth the savings is up to you.

If you are looking longer-term (he will probably keep the system for 3 to 5 years), you might want to look at this:

Optiplex 320 with a 19" LCD for $479

It comes with a 3-year warranty. A 160GB hard drive is only $8 extra, a CD-RW/DVD combo is only $14 (even a DVD burner is only $23). Those are, of course, optional. However, an upgrade to at least 512MB of RAM ($28) is a must.

wooo.. more choices! Thanks for breaking it down for me guys. I appreciate it. I'm counting every penny here. However, I do want something nice for him. Another question. Is there anyway I could purchase the system w/o the windows os and save some more?

Or do you guys think I should wait for few more days to see if better deals pops up?? Not too familiar with Dell's pricing patterns.

If you are doing general office work and web surfing then ANY of these machines should be fine, even for the long haul. My Mom is still using a Win 2000 machine with a 800mHz PIII and 256MB Ram with no issues. Of course she only browses the internet and prints a picture or two every now and then. I would go with XP over Vista unless you are going to get more Ram. Also keep in mind that these machines do not have floppy drives, modems or a CD-RW drive. That said if these are not issues then all of the deals here would be fine. I do agree with the 17" LCD especially for "older" eyes.

There are always deals popping up so waiting probably wouldn't hurt, although you could wait forever and be a slave to the hot deals and never get a computer. Deals come and go but you have to jump some time.

And no, you won't save much if any by omitting the OS on most systems.

yeah I agree about the "older eyes" I'm leaning towards the E520 19" LCD for $469 deal. He's getting old and it would make it his day to see that "giant" 19 incher over his 15 he is using now. My question is (i know, i've been asking a lot), I can't switch the vista to XP on that deal. Anyone know how to do this??

Wondering... Are these 3600's brisbane... And can you OC them? Unlikely Dell allows OC.
