That is a decent deal. I've been watching that computer for my in-laws and for a coworker. The prices over the last 2 months were (note this is the same thing but with 256 MB memory):
Jan 27: $586
Feb 7: $641
Feb 18: $689
So it is nice to see it at $503+a little for the extra memory.

Sadly I'm still waiting for a real hot deal: $399 for this computer.

I've been telling myself since last November (after I missed out on the uber-hot 4550 with free LCD) that it might be interesting to benchmark Dell prices over time, letting me quantify the "hotness" of a particular deal.

The name is intended to be the opposite of people with inflated EGOs, inflated aliases, and subpar posts. Very few people point out the irony, so I assume most of my posts are subpar .

I just got out a piece of paper and wrote down the specs that they needed. I told them I'll watch prices occasionally and let them know if I see a great deal. Every couple of weeks I look again and write the price I get. Note my prices include a 7.0% sales tax, so yours may vary a bit. Sadly I thought one hot deal would have come around by now. My last computer I bought was a Dell 4500 with the same specs 6 months ago that cost $600 with a 17" monitor ($450 without the monitor). Sad that prices have risen since then.

Very amazing, sold my 15" LCD to someone for $250 which dropped my 4550's pricetag to $400 and it was LOADED (2.4 w/533bus, 512, 40, CD-RW, DVD, etc.)

no offense, but I just priced up a better system (more RAM a few other extras and a 128Mb 8500) @ newegg and it's the same price, but better. Sure no OS, but I'm sure you all have one handy.

Whatever, at least wit' teh Dell you get support and warranty and all that good stuff , but I think I'll pass and get a computer with a video card and the necessary RAM to actually do something.

time, warranty, support, legal software... higher resale value...(try to sell a self-build computer versus a DELL on Ebay and you will notice the difference). I build my computer because it's fun to do so, not because it saves me money (it used to be a huge saving couple years ago, but not anymore)

You can't compare a Dell to a build it yourself rig (either you can't build one or you just don't want the hassle). I was comparing apples to apples.

I would never buy another non-prebuilt. THe speed difference is negligible, but the biggest thing for me is noise. I could spend a lot of time and money trying to get HALF as loud (or quiet) as a Dell 8250 and still not get it.

Why? Why can Dell do it and homebuilders have to search all over for expensive quiet PS, fans, etc., Never again.

Greg03 has an extremely valid point. These 4550s are virtually DEAD silent. I have built quite a few computers, far too many of which sound like a hairdryer on full blast in comparision. I didn't jump on any of the fall deals-I was waiting for prices to fall a little more to convince me. My mistake. My next personal box will almost certainly be one of these 4550's-with added aftermarket memory, upgraded video card, etc.

Aftermarket memory yes but the 9700tx might not be a bad deal.

Warning to anyone who buys a Dell 4550 ? After running the Dell you are going to want to spend $$ tying to quite your other computers!

I would be hard pressed to put this together for cheaper including shipping, and have it at my door in 3-5 days and a 1 year warranty and I need a new copy of Win XP anyways.

I mean I really wanted to build my own system, especially due to cooling factors (my computer/office/design studio in the summer can reach 100º ambient temps even with the AC on!). I dont see any way to build that system for $621 total cost incl tax and shipping. The vid card and proc+MB alone would run you nearly $500. I am looking into a Vapochill case to slap the Dell guts into as well and thats gonna cost me an arm and a leg. If someone can recommend building it myself and pricing out these components for nearly the same cost. I'd go for it. Till then its Dell.
