Nice looking deal but I have an X-fi and can't fucking stand it. Vista x64 drivers haven't worked well since I got it two or so years ago. Crackling, screeching, haulting... the sound is nice for the 25% of the time it works though.

Yes. Creative driver suck. Still, unless you're going with onboard sound, what other choices are there? It's not like the Xonar drivers are any better. I've had good luck with my older X-Fi Fata1ty in that I don't get static under Vista or Windows 7, but the thing does make for some very unstable gaming at times.

I just tried PAX drivers for Win7, seems like it's improved somewhat, so far no crackling yet. (It is modded Creative Driver)

It's not bad, but it's not great. Mediocre is the word for Creative for the past ~10 years.

As noted above, I've been pretty problem free with my Creative Windows 7 drivers and kudos to Creative for getting them out there months ago when Windows 7 Evaluation was released.

Of course, since Windows 7 did not include a new API like Vista did, the Windows 7 version was easy to do.

Good Lord, I think the name of the card is actually longer than the card itself!

I picked up an OEM X-Fi on the return shelf at Microcenter for $16. Obviously not as fancy as all this, but it works great, and the positional sound through my headphones in games is quite a bit better than I got with my Audigy 2 ZS.

Haven't had any real problems with it in Vista 64 or Windows 7, been using the Pax drivers from the link below.

Don't confuse that X-fi with the X-Fi Titanium, completely different sound card.
I've had major problems with Vista 64 and my X-Fi Titanium. When it works it sounds great but they have driver and I/O drive issues. I'm trying again when Windows 7 is released.

Other than having Fatal1ty in the name?

Seems like the only real differences are it being PCIe vs. PCI and some additional output ports on the back of the card.

General consensus from an internet standpoint is that from an audio quality standpoint, they're pretty much identical.

Go look at the features and specifications of this card and the original X-fi. Completely different card not to mention this has the I/O drive. It's much more than the name and PCIe. You can compare your $16 deal to this all day long but it's not the same thing.

For around the same funds without a rebate you can get a X-FI Forte. Low profile, X-FI chip, headphone amp built in, changeable amps, and more extras then you can shake a stick at ;)

REVIEW

For those not wanting a BBC card.

I have this card and its been a wet dream ever since I installed it. My music, movies and games never sounded so good. I have owned a X-Fi card and so far I havent had a single driver issue, or computer acting up issue at all.

Integrated headphone amp... I like!

Does this thing work properly with Creative's official drivers?

As said, I have yet to have a single issue with mine, and Ive thrown everything I got at it. Never thought I could love a piece of hardware, but this is perhaps the best thing my wife has ever gotten for me, and NO buyers remorse at all. I have had nothing but problems with creatives cards rebooting my pc out of the blue, screeching sounds instead of is supposed to be played through my speakers, you name it, havent found one made by creative yet that has not given me a headache, this one been great, and I get all the added stuff in my games, with outstanding music and movies.
