hmm... I am sure it is useful to some, but to me it just serves to show just how good that 4830 is value-wise. A bit unlike your usual fantastic deals :p

Hey, it's a recession. Some people need to upgrade the "old" stuff cheaply, lol! :p

woulda been a bit more interesting if it was an AGP card. still then its a bit steep for that level of performance methinks :(

It performs better than the 9600 GSO everyone was drooling over.

Neither can I, but I think that they're pretty close since we're talking about the 9600GSO with 96 SPs and not the newer castrated model.

Was that for me?

Well thank you, but unfortunately it doesn't tell me jack about how a 3850 performs relative to an 8800GS/9600GSO.

http://www.gpureview.com/show_...hp?card1=563&card2=546

edit: I think the 9600 might be better. I don't know, can't find any good comparisons.

The 9600GSO is almost the equivalent of a 8800gt 512, if overclocked by 100mhz, which should be no problem..

Here is a review on the same card.. Review

I don't think it would be near a 8800gt. For one the 9600gso starts out down clocked at about 550mhz (vs 650+ for many 8800gt(s) and OC cards), add to that the castrated 192bit bus and you have a deficit that just can't be made up.

The point is moot as both cards can be overclocked.

Hmmm, I really want to upgrade from my AGP system. Don't really have the money to start a project like that though :( This card would be a great starting point for a new PCI-E system though. If only I could find mobo, memory and CPU for under $100 combined.

The gigabyte 740G board, a cheapo AM2+ dual core from wherever, and one of the 2x2GB ram sets that are $20 after MIR from time to time. Its got to be close!

yeah, it could certainly be done.

and afaik the 9600gso is an 8800gs, which sits between the 3850 and 3870 in performance numbers. 3850 should be about the same as a 4650, i think? (god why did ati start all these variants again)

Power

3850 uses about 60w-65w. 8800gs/9600gso(384/768/g92) uses a bit more 70w-80w. The 9600gt/9600gso(512/g94) uses about the same ~60w.

So

60w <= 3850=9600gt=9600gso(512/g94) < 8800gs=9600gso(384/768/g92) <= 80w

The 3850 sits directly between the 4650 and the 4670. Its usually real close if not to the 4670.

It makes sense as last gens upper range card gets remodeled to the mid range value card. I'm happy for everyone who buys from that segment now. I spent years buying the cheaper card like the 9250/x700/x1650. Those cards completely pale in comparison to these value cards. With a bit of overclocking the 3850/4670 can compete with my personally heralded 8800GTS 320mb. Talk about amazing performance.

I like the 8800gs/9600 series of card, but they consume too much power and generally cost a bit more then they should. Compare the 4830 being $75 AR to the $75 9600GT. There is no comparison on what's better for the $$.

nVidia partners need to lower their prices to remain competitive in the value segment. I'm not biased as i have both my Sapphire 3850 and my Zotac 8800GTS as my backup cards.
