Dead computer parts. Do you keep them for no reason?

It seems some people here(like myself) have a habbit of keeping dead drives, motherboards, etc around. Any reason why you guys do this?
I tend to purge stuff every few months.

No, why would I want too. But a couple of months later, I usualy regret getting rid of them, as I come up with some "smart" plan, where I could have used some parts.

I had an old P166 system.
I have the mobo, proc, cache, RAM, CD-ROM etc in a drawer next to me. And have an old TNT2-M64 and SB Live! doing nothing.
If I ever get some $$ might be able tto put together an old mp3 computer or something if I want with the bits.

And I do want to drill a hole through the P166 and make something nice out of it, but I don't have a drill to do it with.

One plan I had was to make a clock out of the old bits, like they sell at thinkgeek.com, but I don't have a clock mechanism either :/

I have an old 486DX266MHz lying around in parts in some boxes, and a 12GB IDE drive that stopped working, I'm not sure why I haven't gotten rid of that one yet, I guess I'm still hoping it might come to life some day :) 12GB is not a whole lotta space anymore though.

I have this video card, not sure if it works or not. It's about 2 feet long. Over clock it, add more ram (there's extra slots to solder some lol) and add two 120mm fans and you're all set. I'm sure this can have about a meg of memory. LOL

I had this 10 gig die on me not so long ago, I tried to unscrew it but they screws would just strip, so I grinded a line so I can use a flat screw driver so it has more grip. With the cover off, I turned it on. You'd be suprised how loud a drive can be when the cover is off!

Yup, I've got dead stuff galore.

Twice a year it gets dumped at the local computer recycling function. Anything that works gets hacked into a new rig and sold for about twenty bones on the table out front. Leftovers are fair game for the veterans like myself. I usually wind up returning with more crap than I dropped off.

Excellent fundraiser idea, folks. :D

I kept an old Socket 7 board that had died for over a year, but finally pitched it in the trash when mom complained about how ugly it looked sitting under my desk.

<-- has no idea why he keeps dead stuff for so long :Q

I have a ECS K7S5A that I have been meaning to hit with a hammer, I don't know why I haven't done it yet.

I have every old processor of every system we toss out lying around, a 286, a P1 133 and a PII 266, the rest will follow probably ;) but only when they get thrown out of the house, I also made keychains out of old simms, just saw em in half, and round off the sharp corners with a file, they already have a good hole for the ring, hehe.

I've got my original Asus A7-V which I fried once hanging on the wall with a working 800 MHz cpu on it. All my other old stuff still works and is boxed. A 286, a 486, my sister has the P120...going to build a 98se-based DOS-game system soon...still need some parts for that one...but hardly anything goes dead in this house for some odd reason...

I have an old 1.4 ghz tbird that I fried when the 1.4 was the newest chip out... now it's a 150 dollar paperweight... it's hard throwing away something that you've spent a lot of money on even if it doesn't work.

Dead, as in lifeless, broken, useless, no. I usually take them apart for fun, than throw the pieces away.

If they still have life, I figure I'll probably piece together something, or give them away, so I save them.

I've never kept mobo's or add-on cards, but memory, cpu's and hard drives I keep. The memory and cpu's make good ornaments, and I turn the hard drives into geek mirrors.
