Dead computer - help

My brother-in-law's computer just quit working. The first time he turned it on, it said he had a non-system disk. He rebooted, and nothing happened. Now, any time he turns it on, the cpu and case fan spin up, but nothing else comes up. It doesn't even sound like the hard drive is spinning up. When you hold the power button to turn it off, nothing happens then either. I've checked all the connections, and even unseated and re-seated everything. Still nothing. Does that sound like a dead motherboard?

The funny thing is - he lost a hard drive on his laptop, and less than a week later, lost a hard drive on his desktop, and now this? Bad luck, or something else?

If it was just the drive that died the board would still post.

First thing is first. Take out everything you dont need. Nics, Modems, Sound cards, Unplug the cdrom-DVD. UN PLUG the HD. You want to get this thing posting before you go any farther.

Try it again, does it post now? If it does start adding things back one at a time, Making sure that it posts after each componet is added.

Now if it still does not post with everything unplugged there is a good chance it is the board.
