get a H45 pcmcia 2X? 5X? DVD drive from tigerdirect for $130. i am all set. can i boot from it? also you can download the win2k driver from h45 technology web site

that means total price for laptop is almost 1 grand with dvd-rom.
Also I heard battery only last for 1 hour.

Isnt Dell deal better? I want a laptop

Isn't the Dell deal for a full sized notebook (14.1" LCD)? These are two different notebooks, for two different needs. The Compaq is a tiny subnotebook, while the Dell is more of a desktop replacement. This is for people who are willing to sacrifice a few things for ultra-portability. So, it depends what you need.

I was looking at them, and I think I'd rather get the Fujitsu P-Series No need to lug around an external DVD or Burner. Plus its smaller and good battery life. That's what I call portable. Too bad they're out of stock at most places :( By the way, I read many reviews and so far nothing but positive comments. Plus it's got s-video out so you can use it as a portable DVD player ;)

the evo essentially is m3500 and m300 series except for the batteries. they just relabeled it.
i own a m300 p3-500 and typing this on it. has a touchpad, no pointstick.

the thing i like most is its weight, size and bright screen. don't need a cdrom/dvdrom everywhere i go, and i do installs over lan and 1394 cdrw. the nic is pxe. i laugh over people who lug their 6-8lb laptops everywhere to just surf the net or do wordprocessing. and what more do you need when you can store divx's on the harddrive!

Yeah, the Fujitsu looks real cool. I heard that they were having trouble w/ the Crusoe CPU, which is why they've delayed shipping them. I could be wrong, though. It's actually a pretty good value, considering how much you get for the price. Still $600 more than the n400c ;)

Also, the n400c does have an S-Video out. That was one of the things I was looking for in a notebook.

oh yeah, for networking on the go, you do have options.
1) carry a crossover cable / cat5 patch
2) irda
3) 80211x card

btw, m300 series have a max ram of 320mb.

Not only does the Fujitsu have a DVD, it's a DVD/CD-RW combo. Pretty darn good for a notebook that size. I'd be willing to pay the extra money if it was a P3, or even a Celeron, but that Crusoe kinda scares me off.

Floppy Drive form factor internal, 3.5in

According to Compaq:
No Floppy Drive.

Looks like another PCMall typo. The n400c doesn't have an internal floppy as an option. I asked a CSR and he thinks it's a typo. That's my guess too.

I am so tempted on buying this laptop. I want one...but it just so hard to get when you dont even have a floppy nor a cdrom.

hope the system is brand new i just ordered the Firewire Thing.

Since this baby allows you to boot from the USB port its better of getting a USB 2.0 drive because when u have problems u can boot with usb1 and when u back in windows u can use 2.0.

Maybe the CPU can be upgraded to a higher Pentium 3 Like Maybe a 850MHZ?

Cant seem to find the mother board specs didn't try to match up the part numbers yet with 700 and 850.
I was think maybe the 850MHZ maybe uses the Same MB.

you look at any similar spec'd machine, and you are looking at closer to $1900 than $900. This deal is growing on me :)
