(DEAD) Cheap 128MB RDRAM from Best Buy

I dunno, I still see it as $9.99 in the cart. Of course, not available for delivery or pick-up. But the most amusing part is:

"Warranty Term ? Parts 99 years"

The deal appears dead. When you try to move your selection to the cart a window pops up stating the ram is not availabile for delivery or store pickup.

two?

:Q many will have:

best buy will be hearing a whole lotta complaining out of me if this is in fact 2 64 meg sticks, because the site specifically says it's a 128 module.

The information on the modules I just got off the picture (so if it isnt like the picture I my be wrong), the people I talked to at BB didnt know any more information about it than what was on the screen.

look at this page here. the description here, says:

"
PRODUCT FEATURES
256MB (two 128MB Rambus) of memory to improve performance

Operates at a speed of 800MHz

184-pin, dual in-line memory module (DIMM)
"

as opposed to the ones that we ordered, which say:

"
Improve your computer's speed and performance with a 128MB Rambus memory module. You'll enjoy faster multitasking, Web browsing and gaming

...

128MB of memory to improve performance

Operates at a speed of 800MHz

168-pin dual in-line memory module (DIMM)
"

i don't know about you, but it looks to me like best buy copied and pasted from a SD-RAM feature set on the ram we ordered - notice the 168 pin's in the description?

it probably is 2 64 meg sticks, but you can bet your ass i'll be raising hell the instant 8 64 meg sticks show up at my door. i've already got the pages saved, so i can print them off for later use.

Take a close look at the picture of the K-Byte RAM on the page that we ordered from. When you look at the enlarged picture, in the upper left hand corner of each module is a Samsung logo. My hunch is that Best Buy is just using the wrong picture on the page.

For what its worth, I called (yesterday after I had already ordered) the company that makes K-Byte and confirmed that the product with the model # listed on the page was compatible w/my Sony Vaio. Stupid me, I forgot to ask if they were 128MB

I ordered 4 of these (shipment notification received this morning) and they better be 128 MB each. If they ship in pairs of 64MB, I will do whatever it takes to get exactly what I ordered. If Best Buy customer service doesn't come through, I will call the Better Business Bureau, the NYC Dept. of Consumer Affairs, or the local TV news consumer reporters...WHATEVER IT TAKES!

both of my orders (total 3X128) are now: "back ordered", so i guess after all i will not have to worry about the 64 Vs 128. It would be a real good gift for my friend. well, hope others get better luck.

Seems to be back in stock now! No popup warnings. Says "In Stock" -- ships within 2-3 days. I'm checking out with 4 of them right now. Maybe someone should call BB and ensure they're 1x128mb RIMM's and not 2x64MB... Just a thought...

Dead? Heck, I just ordered 4.

The order confirmation I just received says "In Stock - Usually ships in 2-3 business days."

Hopefully the 4 sticks I ordered will come out to 512mb. Coupled with the motherboard at compgeeks for $41 AOpen P4 motherboard and a few other deals on the board and you can get yourself a nice cheap P4 system going.

Odd.. I still get

K-Byte 128MB Rambus Memory MODU50607
Not available for delivery at this time
Not available for store pickup

🙁

How "GOOD" is BB online inventory system?
Hours after getting 2 backorder notice email for my 2 orders. I get the second order's Order Acknowledgement ! (The first order Order Acknowledgement is yestersday) 🙂
Then both of my orders went back to "In order" status rather than the "backorder" this morning!

BB must have the "Best" system that keep track the order/cancel, so that my orders go like this....

Now i am waiting for the 2 backorder notice emails send to me again. 😛

amd never supported it, and intel just announced this week that they won't be in the future, so these are going the way of the Dodo I'd presume ...

I don't know what everybody else uses but I definitely use Rdram. I use Rdram because I want the ultimate in performance and if you want the ultimate in performance you want Rdram. Despite whatever anti-rambus propaganda you may have heard DDR cannot hold a candle to Rdram when it comes to performance. Check out this review and comparision of 2 dual Xeon system one of them using PC800 Rdram and the other using dual channel DDR.

http://www.2cpu.com/Hardware/iwill_dp400/

Notice that the E7500 is one of the newer dual channel DDR chipsets, not single channel as most older DDR chipset, and should in theory offer the same amount of bandwidth as the PC800 Rdram/I860 combo, but nonetheless the I860/Rdram combination beats it handily.

As for the future of Rdram that's still unclear. It's true that Intel has not announced any new Rdram chipsets yet and the indications are they will be moving more toward DDR support but I don't believe they have officially stated that they will stop supporting Rdram completely any time soon. I believe what I've heard is that Intel will continue to support Rdram at least to the end of 2003 but I could be wrong about that. Anyway, it doesn't really matter because memory standards change so frequently that whatever you buy today will be obsolete in a year or 2. Even if you buy DDR in a year or 2 it'll be replaced by something newer and faster even if it's just faster DDR. So, you may as well just go with whatever offers the best performance at the moment and not worry about what the next memory standard will be.

OK, how can I put these in my AMD motherboard? Intel has dropped support for these, DDR memory is getting MUCH faster quickly, is cheaper and doesn't have to be installed in pairs. Grab these while you can, hopefully they are not 64 Meg modules but I have a feeling they are.

So I received my order yesterday but, I'm a bit confused. The package only contains one stick of memory and it reads both "128MB Rambus Kit" and also "Two 64MB Rambus Modules". FYI--the memory is by Samsung.

Is this really 128MB and I've just never heard it explained as 64 x 2 before? Forgive me but I'm not as tech savy as some of you guys.

Also, the package says lifetime warranty, so don't worry about the "99 yr" stuff on the website.

I do. I've got a Dell Precision 340 workstation that uses it. I can't believe I missed out on this deal completely 🙁 I've been looking for inexpensive rambus for the last month or so but since the majority of PCs don't use it, it's hard to find for cheap. Crucial.com doesn't even carry it because the demand isn't high enough.

Oh well.
