Nero Express/ Nero Vision Express and WinDVD/Sonic MyDVD <edit> warning..for those of you who have a bundled version from some previous drive ..it will not work with this drive(unless said previous drive was a Pioneer DVD-R possibly..) and if you have full version Nero Burning Rom ..this will overwrite turning your Nero into this version of Express..

The first thing everyone should do is make sure you have the latest firmware (I think it's V1.21?) You can find it over here. There is a little proggie you can download too which will tell you what revision your firmware is. I think I read earlier in these posts that it flashing it to the latest version fixes some 2X/4X writing and compatibility issues?

From what I heard you should not upgrade to the latest firmware. Doing so will cause a lot more problems than the v1.00 firmware. The 1.22 firmware seems to have some sort of problem.

Well thats kinda funny. My DVD drive came into today and its still showing processing. But the funny thing is I just installed the drive and was coming back to post if I needed to update my firmware. Its now showing 1.00. I thought you had to flash it to get the 4X speeds? Is this incorrect on my part for thinking? :) Now from the two post above one saying to flash and the other saying not to flash it!? Whats everyone else done that bought this drive done flash or not to flash? I do know the DVD-RW that came with it looks about generic as can be. I havnt bought any DVD-Rs yet because I wanted to make sure it came in. Should I format this DVD-RW first or can you start using it right away?

Thanks!

you can use it right away. as for the firmware upgrade, it does improve dvd-r/rw writeability but also is more stringent when it comes to allowing cheap/unsigned media.

Oh well, throw that out the window...I just finished re-flashing to 1.21 about 10 minutes ago. Hopefully, I won't run into any problems - burning 1st DVD-RW right now.

I made a call to my local Staples this afternoon to see if they had any in stock. To my suprise, they did. This was after I already checked the web site and was told they were out of stock. So, to anyone who's going only by the website, I reccomend calling around.
I went ahead and used a $20 coupon I had lying around, since I don't have a printer; I still feel it was a pretty good deal though,

By the way, does anyone know a good place to pick up some cheap 1x or 2x media? I'm all about some 4x, but I wouldn't mind playing around with the cheaper stuff while I get used to the whole dvd scene. Thanks in advance.

This sucks Ive been trying to burn to this generic 1X DVD-RW that came with the drive. I can burn it fine but when I try and view the data I get the message: Windows cant read from disk. The disk might be currupted, or it could be using a format not capatible with windows? I used nero and also tried formatting the disk? Did I do somthing wrong or is the DVD-RW that comes with the drive just a POS?

I just did the firmware update and noticed in Nero that my cd speed dropped from 28x to 16x, wierd huh? But, I saw this ( Click on DVR-A05,DVR-105 "Change history" icon )on Pioneer's site and figured it was best that I flashed. I haven't noticed anything else yet, then again I haven't done anything except read a few cds and view a little Shrek on it.

P.S. Am I reading you people correctly, the disc that came with the drive is a dvd-rw (I see it on the box now, duh). IF so, I'm going to play around with it and try this puppy out. I was saving it for something worthwhile thinking it was just a -r. Now I don't have to wait for that shipment from ESBuy. Also, my thanks goes to the originator and all else for helping me pull this in so cheap.

Didn't have time to post this reply until now. Staples courier delivered the drive Wed. morning.......one day earlier than the "rescheduled" delivery date.
Screaming deal, got mine for grand total (taking MIR into consideration) of $113.45.
Special thanks to MysticMan1 for the original post, and to spinn, for the heads up about the Bay area Fry's ad which I was able to pricematch to.

huesmann, ah no I didnt close the session. I thought maybe I was suppose to leave it open incase I wanted to write back to it again? I also didnt know if I closed it if I could reformat it and rewrite back to it again even being a DVD-RW. Im just so use to burning CD-Rs and closing but the default on the DVD setup in Nero I think was to leave it open so I did. Is that my problem I didnt close the session? If so why do they even give you the option to leave it open if you cant even read it or should I say the purpose? Reguardless thanks for the reply! :)

yes, you need to close the session. You can still format it after closing. I have formatted a couple times to test our the burner and there are no problems.

Hopefully my dvd-rs will come in Friday so I have more than 1 piece of media to play with :)

Sorry 'bout the delay BuckMaster. It was a late last night, I tried to backup a DVD, it took too long, so I called it a night. Today I had things to do early but, since I've had the chance to format and copy some stuff to the rw. It all worked fine for me be it @ 1x, eh. It's good to here huesmann helped you out. I'm very happy so far.
