After I installed this drive I used Instant Copy 7 to burn a backup movie onto the DVD-RW that came with the drive. I had an image of the movie and loaded it with a virtual drive, I then told Instant copy to make a direct copy from the Virtual drive (It was less then 4.3 gigs). When it completed the burn I tried loading it in my computers DVD-Rom drive and it did not work, it would not even read the disc, the Cendyne drive wouldn't even recognize the data it just burned onto the disc. I was doubtful, but I popped it into my DVD Player (one that doesn't even play SVCD's) and it played like a charm. Im not sure why it worked this way, but Im not complaining. I just hope my burner will be able to erase the disc for more testing.

Let's keep this thread about the Hot Deal and limit the feedback about the drive itself (not picking on you personally, this is the last of a long line of such posts.) Remember, there are other forums to discuss the drive, and there are some good links in the original post as well.

(By the way, I got in on this and I had the same problem, but all 5 DVD-R burns I've done have been fine. Just to let you know, I think it's just the DVD-RW that comes with it. ;))

Hey you guys/Mods who had problems with your DVD-ROMs reading the included RW disc--were your ROM drives made before RWs were common? Possible incompatibility with RWs? Was the RW disc also non-functional in the RW drive?

Any hot deals on media?

Looks like I didn't get the message through. Please refer to the sources listed above for a discussion on DVD+-R/RW, and let this forum remain for Hot Deals.

And ask for hot deals on media in the "I wanna" thread.

I just want to be sure because I know they just throw your stuff out if something is missing or not right, and 50 bones is 50 bones...

I always print the order from the website and include that as the invoice. if you are paranoid, also include the shipping thing.

If you need a receipt (and not just a packing slip) you can call Staples and they will fax or mail you one.

If you are looking for 4X media that works in this drive, supposedly Ritek, you can get a 25 pack for $44 with free shipping at this place.

This place is supposed to be pretty highly rated, at least with Reselleratings. I ordered yesterday and they sent a confimation e-mail right away. A few hours later I got the UPS tracking number. I like this e-mail feedback! I think they ship from Southern California.

The fact that MS backed the DVD+R format is kind of a moot point.

Most people who got DVD writers are using them to make copies of DVDs, or for archiving their own videos, or in my case for distribution of wedding videos and that type of thing. As long as blank DVD-R disks remain available for the next few years -- which they will -- there is really no problem with choosing one or the other format. This isn't like Beta vs. VHS. In that case the competing formats would not play in the other VCR. DVD recordables are not like this at all -- DVD-R and DVD+R play in the exact same machines and drives which isn't going to change that much in the next few years. Now if you are interesting in using the drive for backing up data and computer stuff like that, DVD+ has some advantages. If you are interested in Video distribution, or DVD copying, DVD-R appears to be more compatible, which in my opinion, makes it the better choice.

I suspect that there will be no "winner" for many years. What will happen is more and more drives like the Sony combo drive which writes to both formats. Myself, I would rather have a $150 DVD-R drive and a separate $150 DVD+R drive instead of the combo drive for over $300.

Just wondering: is anyone else having problems with the included DVD-RW disc?

I attempted several times to burn a data disc, not even a movie. And it failed each time during the data verification. I tried both: regular Nero which I had installed already and used to burn DVDs before and the included Nero Express. Both with the same failure.

Another problem I am having is that it will not read my OptoDisc DVD-RW that I burned only 2 months ago on the predecessor of this drive.

I did not try to burn any DVD-R discs. They are a little too expensive to simply burn a coaster.

Yeah Walliser, My included disc failed until the point of it wouldn't even erase anymore........ I went down to office depot and picked up a 5 pack of memorex dvd-rw for 19.99 to practice my dvd copying skills with and they work fine. I took the dvdrw that came with the drive and threw it out my front door in the general direction of staples and it flew pretty good!! I guess thats all it was good for.
I also burned a few samsung dvd-r's my friend gave me and they wroked great. Seems that crapola one they sent was worthless..

Mine is bad as well.
