Thanks Lightsider. I think I will hold off till I can find some better quality CD-Rs

But he's only talking about the Imations, right? What about the Hivals or ValueDisc?
Besides, isn't CMC at least better than Ritek?

I think he is talking about the ValueDisc 200 pack...at least that was what I was asking for...the CMC,Imation is just a guess made by the program...they wil probably burn at 48x without smartburn, but the you would get more errors and have slower\buggy readback when you try to use the disc.

I think I may have made an error. I checked this disc on my Lite-On 32X. I'm not sure if SMART-Burn would recommend a level higher than the drive the disc was examined on. Maybe someone else with a BIOS updated 48X (haven't installed mine yet), should double-check these findings.

Thanks MysticMan1 This is the first deal I've actually ever taken advantage of. Everything is on the way as I type! I just hope this doesn't start to become addictive.

Just got off the long phone call w/ OM. First call, got Jim. Thinking someone here said he's no good, I said 'Sorry, wrong number'. Second call - Edna - female, acted alright at first, then got defensive if I asked any questions. At end of order, I asked for a rundown of all prices. She wouldn't do it, yelling that my total was x then tax and coupon = x.

When I told her the Cendyne #, she at first couldnt find it even though I told them the Memphis add. She finally came back and I can't find it and asked if I was sure it's on page 1. I said the one guy on front and he's pointing to the drive! She said she had two sales adds w/ guy on front. Finally found it.
Next up - Hival 100 pack CDRs. Discontinued. Had to order the 200pk el cheapo.
Next - CID phone. She said $19.99. I said nope, website says $10. She had to go verify that too.
Told her I had a coupon.
She gave me a confirmation (think that's what she called it) number.
Asked for coupon code.

That was it. She got very friendly when I asked for her name again at end of call.

A little bit of a hassle, but I enjoyed hearing her say "CDRah" a few times.

*****YOUR RESULTS MAY VARY*****

With the Cendyne 48x12x48 default settings on windows 2000 server. Defualt firmware. Drive is a repackaged Liteon. Says liteon on the drive. Says liteon on the free cd-r media. Says liteon on the nero cd. Its liteon.

Bought the 200 disc el cheap for 4.99.

I stuck a few cd-r's in the drive to and used smart-burn. Would like to share my results. They may vary for you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Office Depot 700MB 80Min cd-r
This Disc is designed for CD-RW/COMBO Drive Only.
Disc Type, Material = CD-R, Cyanine
ATIP Lead-in = 97m 28s 22f
Norminal Capacity = 702.83MB (79m 59s 74f)

SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 24X

Imation 700MB 80MIN 32X cd-r Note. I buy these by the hundreds from buy.com and outpost.com
This Disc is designed for CD-RW/COMBO Drive Only.
Disc Type, Material = CD-R, Phthalocyanine
ATIP Lead-in = 97m 26s 66f
Norminal Capacity = 702.83MB (79m 59s 74f)
Disc Manufacturer maybe = CMC,Imation
SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 48X

Elcheapo-200 700MB 80MIN cd-r
This Disc is designed for CD-RW/COMBO Drive Only.
Disc Type, Material = CD-R, Phthalocyanine
ATIP Lead-in = 97m 26s 66f
Norminal Capacity = 702.83MB (79m 59s 74f)
Disc Manufacturer maybe = CMC,Imation
SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 48X

Thats right folks. Looks like the elcheapo-200(For the lack of the real name) are Imations for real. I have had great success with these cd's. I love them. I have currently over 2000 burned with my plextor 12/4/32 scsi. They have worked everytime.

I thought elcheapo was cool. But yes they are ValueDisc Box says 32x. Made in Taiwan.

Come in 4 sets of 40. No spindle just shrinkwraped in a sturdy box.

All in all. I am very happy with my purchase. Thinking of making a few more for Xmas gifts.

"....A 48X burner and 200 cd's!!.."

EDIT: Both the Imation and the Valuedisc successfuly burn at 48X and are readable on all of the dell machines we have here at work.

Error free at 48X!

Just bought the CD-Rs to complete this SWEET deal. The CSR was a littly inexperinced, so it took a while, he didn't know that they took competitors coupons and when I finally convinced him, he wanted me to submit the coupon through the website (and make the purchase online) but in the end I got him to take the office depot 10 off 50 coupon without actually proving I had it ;) .

So here is the deal I got. I made my purchase in two separate batches.

Purchase 1

Cendyne 48x burner + 2x 5pack memorex CDRW media + Bestdata PCI modem + blaster canned air
Retail price = 110 + 12 + 30 + 10 = 162
minus instant rebates (30 + 4 + 20 + 5) = 103
Plus tax = 108
minus officemax 25 of 100 = 83 out the door (free shipping on orders over 50 bucks)
minus mail in rebates (30 + 5) = 48

Purchase 2

200 ValueDisc CD-Rs + free after rebate speakers + free after rebate phone + paper clips
Retail price = 60 + 10 + 25 + 1.29 = 96.29
minus instant rebates (20 + 1 + 15 + 0) = 60.29
Plus tax = 62
minus office depot 10 of 50 = 52 out the door (free shipping on orders over 50 bucks)
minus mail in rebates (35 + 9 + 10) = -2

Totals
Retail = 270
Out the door = 135
After mail in rebates (5 rebates totaling 90 bucks) = $45

Final Price breakdown

Free after rebate crap (Phone + speakers + canned air) = $25 - $25 = $0
Modem I needed anyway = $10
48x Burner + 200 CDRs + 10 CDRWs = $35

That is one sweet deal

Notes:
1) The rebate on offficemax.com for the call ID phone says $5 even though the webpage says it is $10 so I didn't bother to go for it

2) Even if you don't send in the rebates, this is a decent deal, but with rebates it is scorching HOTTT

The CSR said the call ID phone rebate form was printed wrong and you will receive a $10 rebate not the $5 printed on the rebate form.

Like MysticMac1 said on the first page, they're supposed to price match their own stores. Tell them what area add you saw it in.

If you have a liteon drive, go to their website and there are steps listed. Basically, the 48x drive will allow you to run the .exe file that you unzipped directly in windows and thats all there is to it. Make sure you have all your programs closed and don't turn off your computer while the flashing is done.

Got my drive on the promised day. UPS left it even though OM said they wouldnt w/out a signed note from me since I wasn't going to be home. The box was way oversized and beat up, and a tiny little bit of stuffing, so half of the box was empty. Not very safe. Also the box with a huge open gap all the way down the top at the side where the flap folds. You could reach in the box! Not very impressive. Haven't tried it yet. Hope it works OK.

Anyway, it's got the VS04 firmware. Should I flash to VS06? Anyone using VS06 that has problems? Or, the mod at cdfreaks.com says VS02 has the least problems. Should I flash to it?
