I got a 32X yesterday at the local B&M OMax used the $25. off coupon, but all they had was Mitsumi, I returned it today and got a 24X instead....but all they have is ACER....ne1 know if the ACER 2410A will do SD2 backup ??

I may have gone from bad to worse on this one..

Osage,
according to CloneCD creator, Acer might be able to do SD2, provided it is based on Philips drive.
look Here

Also look at the drive FCC #
Then look it up Here
It will let you know who register for the drive (my TDK 24X FCC# match the one registered by LiteOn)

Hope this helps

Thanks for a nice deal! I went to my OfficeMax B&M yesterday and was handed the 32X Mitsumi drive. Having the knowledge provided in this thread, I was able to politely ask my sales rep to please look for a drive with 12#'s in the SN. He came back five mins later with the only one they had in the back with 12#'s. Even better, the sales manager didn't blink when I presented the $25 of $100 coupon. And, yes, the drive is indeed a Lite On 32X.

BTW, Mitsumi drives (at least 24X) can indeed backup SD2 using the Amplify Weak Sectors option in CloneCd. I have firsthand experience with it. Of course, other mitsumi drives may have different capabilities.

There is an article on some web site I checked earlier in the week about SD2 2.xx protection. The Mitsumi wasn't able to do the latest SD2 copy at first (cdrinfo review) but with CloneCD mod for AWS (amplify weak sectors) it was reported to make useable copies. I have one of the Mitsumi ones that I picked up before the sales - was later able to price guarantee it down.

Picked up one of the Lite-On model today using Staples 30/150 coupon at OfficeMax. I needed some paper and other odds and ends so the extra $40 was a problem. Like others here, final price will be $110-$30 coupon -$30 MIR fro $50. Hard to beat these prices. BTW, OfficeMax now has the 16x CDRW onsale for $69-$30MIR - combine that with a Staples 10/40 to yield a $29 drive. Hard to fine a simple CD-Rom for that price. :)

I have Lite-On 32x12x40x. I was backing up my audio CD which had 660mb data. I used clonecd to make an image and then to burn it on a 16x 700 mb CDR. It took me 6:30min to make an image and 9:10min to burn it. I had my read and write settings to max and yet it took that long. Then I used Nero 5.5 to rip another audio cd which was about 450 mb. I used a similar CDR (16x) and had my write read speed set to 40x and speed set to 32x. It again took me like 5min to read and 8 min to write. I dont why it took so long. Is it because my CDR was 16x, but then why did it accept 32x write speed. Any ideas on how to improve the speed? :(
Thanks

It's the 16x media you are using. This might explain why :
(the LTR-32123S drive contains a predefined list of good quality media. When the CD is in that list, the drive burns at a pre-specified speed with pre-defined writing strategy and you have the maximum writing speed. When an unknown disc is inserted the drive will burn it with specified speed, default strategy and running OPC at the same time. Last, when a bad quality disc is inserted, LiteOn 24x will burn at vari-speed in order to produce the maximum quality result. LiteOn continues to use Mediatek's chipsets which are: ........ Last the "Smart-X" means Smart Monitoring & Adjusting Read-speed Technology -for- eXtraction. CD-DAE/VCD data extraction speed will increase or decrease by host system demand (lower for playback or higher for copy) & media quality condition. )

Also check to see if the DMA is enabled for your CD-RW drive.

Well I got the Mitsumi 32X in my box (I ended up trashing the box sleeve to get the drive out). Installed it and Nero 5.5 that came with it on my PC (running XP). Installed it on the same ide cable as the CD drive (with both set to Cable Ready jumper settings). It burns audio and data CD's fine, but it gave me a warning when I tried to burn them on-the-fly - stating something to the effect that since both CD drives were on the same IDE bus, there was a potential prob with buffer underrun so it suggested that I copy to HD and then burn the disk when making CD copies. I've been doing that with good success but I'm wondering if I switch IDE cables so that the CD-RW and HD are on one adn the CD is on the other -w ill that make a difference? (the question may be moot since there's no way I can get both the HD and CD-RW on the same IDE Cable).

Oh, the B&M manager was great about accepting the printout of the 25 off 100 coupon - he said buy it here so my kids can eat - don't buy it online :)

AirJames....( Does anyone know how to convert the Verbatim to a LiteOn?)

There is a DOS program that worked on the 24x Verbatim drive, but on one has been brave enough to try it on the 32x drive. Do you want to be the first one to give it a try on your drive? As long as the drive is performing OK there's really no reason to change it.

Platinum....(How did some of you get it for $109.99 base price? )

The $109.99 base price was last weeks price, this week it $119 in the store and $129 on-line, but you should be able to buy it on-line and then price match the in-store price under OfficeMax's 110% low price guarantee.

Thanks mysticman for the reply. But after searching for their price match policy, i found this:

If you find a lower price at any office product superstore on a new identical item, just show us the lower price when you buy the item at OfficeMax or within 14 days after your OfficeMax purchase and we'll give you 115% of the difference.

blah, blah...

If you find a lower price in an OfficeMax store, OfficeMax catalog or at OfficeMax.com, we will match the lower price. The additional 15% of the price difference does not apply.

Does that mean I'm stuck with the base price of $119.99?

Is the printable Staples $30 off $150 coupon still valid? If so, will someone pm me a copy?

Thanks!

Yes, that means no extra 15% off, but that would have only reduced the price by another $1.50. So, your final cost now is $64.99.

I was wondering if you could point me in the direction of that DOS program. I would consider it because CDRWIN doesn't support the Verbatim drive as of yet.

something wrong about the lite-on drives. :( I am able to burn data or copy cds onto Kingston Hypermedia (8x) that I got a year ago, burning at 8x (the slowest selectable speed), but the CD is not recognized in any drive/CD player, even though nero says burning completed successfully. On the other hand, my other drive HP9100i is able to burn on the Kingston CDRs from the same spindle without any problems and I can read all the CDs in any drive. I am using the latest nero s/w. this sucks...:(

Hmmm...I call in yesterday and try to cancel my order saying that I saw the price on the Cendyne drive was cheaper last week. The CSR then went ahead and ask his manager and calling my local store to confirm that they did indeed have it for $109.99. He came back on the phone and tells me his manager approve it and i'm got it for $109.99 base price :)

So some of you might still get lucky. Maybe if you threaten to cancel your order, they'll give in :)

LurkingInNC....(Price up to $129 in VA b/m store when I went last night. )

The in-store ad clearly states that the sale ends Sat., so the price on the 32x drive should still be $119.99 in the store unless they have a different price in your area, if they do have them PM a area that has the lower price or buy on-line and PM a area with the lower price.

Here's the ad check the price in your area Link to ad

Why don't you give those old 8x CDRs away or, burn they on your HP9100i drive, then buy yourself some new 32x media for your new 32x LiteOn burner.
OfficeMax will be selling a 50 pack of 32x Khypermedia for $2.99 after $7 rebate, starting Sunday. Also starting sunday at Staples TDK 50/PACK 32x CD-Rs for $4.99 after $10 rebate.
