There are tons of reviews of the Lite-on that would let you see good pics of it.

<< do the lite-on drives have the same lite-on front bezel or is it a completely different design? i am hoping the lite-on drive will somewhat match my lite-on dvd. anyone have a pic of how the front bezel looks like? thanks! >>

Mine don't match. And, in fact, the white-beige color is even slightly different. But, I got my DVD late last year, and I noticed that there is a different model out now (ends in D--163D(?)).

sorry for the confusion. i actually know what lite-on drives look like. i was just afraid that since these are rebadged lite-ons that even if the actual drive was a lite-on drive, they might use a CenDyne face plate or something. from your responses i assume this is not the case correct? the cendyne drives that are rebadged lite-ons look identical to actual lite-on drives?

I think re-badging would cost an extra $1 per drive, so there's no way they would spring for it at these kinds of prices ;)

To answer your question, my Cendyne (Lite-on) drive looks identical to the drives in reviews, accept mine doesn't have the lite-on label on it.

Right. No rebadging going on here. Just generic beige with no indication of brand (rather, remarketer)

This My drive is a verbatim thing you keep talking about is freaking me out, because it dosen't make sence. Why would CenDyne have verbatim, a company that only makes CD-R media, mfg a their CD-RW, that is really mfg by Lite-on????? Unless verbatim now owns the Lite-on mfg company, it just doesn't add up.

Who knows why... TDK is known for media, not drives, but they got into the re-badging business and it's (From all appearences) doing very well for them... maybe Verbatim wanted to follow suit... maybe a 24X Verbatim box is just around the corner and Cendyne just got them when the regular Lite-on drives ran out.

Ok! but that wouldn't explain why there's a verbatim mfg sticker no top of the Lite-on mfg sticker. :p
Is the drive mfg by verbatim or Lite-on ???? Which sticker is correct????

Does the drive look like the Lite-on's that have been reviewed? I bet it does! I bet it can be updated with Lite-on firmware! ;)

How can I say this? Verbatim doesn't manufacture optical recorders, Lite-on does!

Ok, if you guys don't belive thats fine, all i need to know is I have a
lite-on drive, that has a verbatim firmware... now when i take that lite-on
firmware flash does it care what firmware was installed before it?

This might sound callous, but you should just be willing to sacrifice one of your drives to find out... if for some reason your drive becomes inoperable you shouldn't have a problem exchanging it.

It has a lite-on label, there's no reason the firmware update wouldn't work. The new firmware should just overwrite the Verbatim firmware. The Verbatim firmware is probably nothing more than the Lite-on firmware modified to report as a Verbatim

Couldn't this deal be made even hotter by price matching to drive from $119.95 to the $104.95 price at Buy.com? Here's the link at buy.com

I might try it tomorrow.... Bet the CSR will try to add shipping costs into the price match though, but even then it'd still probably be a few bucks cheaper.

Let me know if anyone else trys it.

I think they are going to point out that the price after the $25 coupon is already cheaper than buy.com

but who knows, there are lots of stupid CSR's out there.

I agree with gunf1ghter. Grow some b@llz, and if it isn't past OM's return date, then you're basically protected. If anything, you'll get another drive.

We belive you, it's just that we are trying to figure out what's going on with this, like why would CenDyne buy a drive from verbatim that's mfg by lite-on, when they are already buying drives mfg by lite-on from Lite-on??? Since the Mfg is identify as verbatim (VBT241040a) when the computer boot-up, it's clearly is a verbatim CD-RW. But why is there no mention of a verbatim selling CD-RW drives no thier web site, verbatim.com??? Mmmmm! the mystery contiues.

As far as flashing the drive using Lite-on firmware, I would first use the drive for period of time to see if the firmware needs to be updated. If the mfg date is the same as HFC's verbatim drive ( Dec 2001), you may already be using the latest frimware avaliable.

I purchased a cendyne packaged cdrw. drive is identified on its sticker, and in BIOS/Windows as a verbatim 241040AL with firmware 58SA. I peeled off the sticker on the drive and (no surprise), it's really a liteon LTR-24102B.

So I want to upgrade the firmware to make the drive show up as a liteon in windows, and possibly take advantage of newer features/upgrades that come w/the new firmware. but the liteon firmware won't upgrade the drive as it doesn't recognize it as a liteon. I've tried placing a jumper in all the positions that i can on the back of the drive next to the digital audio (on the left side), but nothing works. the drive is still recognized as a verbatim. i've even tried booting into dos and running pflash and trying to load an older liteon .bin file, but no go.

Anyway, any suggestions/links/files anyone has would be greatly appreciated by more people than just me, i'm sure.

On CenDyne.com there is a firmware update for Internal 24x10x40 IDE High Speed CD-RW Drive For PC, CDI CD00091, 24102B only, that you can try, but if your drive was mfg recently (check the mfg date) you may already have the latest firmware.

Ok i'm pissed off. help me please
i got the drive, i think i got an aopen (16 or so digit # w/out dashes). Well the device manager reads the cdrw as "ATAPI CD-R/RW 24X10" WTF is that. The bios reads it as "24X10 P.MJ" WTF again. I wouldnt care at all if it worked fine. But i tried to create an iso of a cd and it took almost 10 min, thats not reading at 40X. CD burns take only 4-5 min, but the CD doesnt work like it should. Anyone else have this prob, or should i just take it back??? HELP

Someone on another fourm said he got a atapi brand drive and it's sorry as hell, freezes up his computer and restarts. He's returning it and try to get the lite-on version with the "Smart-burn" sticker on the box. You might want to try the same thing.
