Dead card or

PCI buss. I got my linksys router/switch up and running but now one of my machine has crapped the NIC card. It will install but the connection light on the card does not come on, I replaced it with another NIC and the same problem. Is it possible that the PCI slots have gone by by? I have 3 empty slots and tried both modems in all the slots. It recognizes the cards in every slot but the connect light never comes on so it wont work. I have a modem in one of the slots and it works ok.
What do you think??

im not realy sure about this, just suggestions:

1) are you overclocking your fsb? because i heard NIC's realy dont like to be overclocked.
2) some time ago on my old computer my NIC was misfunctioning because it kept running into IRQ conflicts with my sound card, even if i switched slots. maybe your cards conflict with another device.

No overclock on the machine, The nic was working just fine on my lan but phfffft it went. No conflicts. I just find it hard to believe that 2 nics go south like that.

actually the machine is pretty sparce, no sound card it is a machine that all it does is SETI

If windows detects the card, then your PCI bus is most likely fine. Does the light on the LinkSys come on when you plug the cable into it? Are you sure your cable is good?

I tried a new cable but no help. The led on the nic does not come on, I should have been a little more explicit. The led on the nic should come on even if it is not connected to the router, right? The really odd thing is both of them worked before I plugged the router in. I had the machine on a hub and made sure my network was running properly before trying the router. I would get another nic but I will have to order it as all we have here is a Staples and they want to much money for nic's . I dont think that anything in the router would harm the nic.
