DEAD: Bulk Salmon

Since AT is infatuated with bulk <insert object/meat/anything>, thought this might be of interest.
Saw it on slickdeals.

Linky to fish.

Edit: Sold out!

And yes, as caveman pointed out, big difference between farm raised and fresh salmon. Good deal while it lasted.

10.50/lb is way over priced.

I can even get Salmon at the local grocery on sale for like 3.99 when not more like 7.99

Let's see, shipped non-fresh salmon for $11.50/lb, or fresh salmon right away for half or less.

Umm, I'll go with fresh. NO SALE.

WORST. DEAL. EVAR!

qft

The reason it's "so expensive" is because it's better quality salmon and is not farm raised. It's okay though... go spend $3.99/lb for pink salmon that's been thawed out for a few days.

QFT. apparently some people don't know the difference between real, wild Alaskan salmon and $4.99 lb farmed godawful.

Let's not spoil their fun.

😉

Uhmmm... folks here who think this is a bad deal are clueless... Farm raised and fresh salmon don't compare. Also... fresh, flash frozen salmon is usually better than fresh because it seals in the flavor before time at fresh temps destroys the fish.

All things being equal, a fresh fish eaten within hours will be better than a flash frozen fish eaten within a day, but give it 48 hrs and the fresh quickly degrades past it's ~5% lead in flavor very quickly and turns to junk.

Aside from fresh vs flash frozen, the type of salmon species makes a HUGE difference in price. Pinks (humpys) are what's sold in the cans and canneries pay fishermen approx 30X more for "gourmet" salmon like red (Sockeye) or King (Chinook). Silvers are about 1/2 the price of a red, but make great smokers due to their high fat content.

So... for gourmet salmon, 10.50/lb is very cheap. With some research you'll find that the usual price for wild, frozen salmon from AK is about $14-20/lb.

Not to mention that $4/lb farm raised salmon literally turns the ocean floor into a toxic sludge. But environmental effects aside, big box cheapy salmon has truly created an entire population of salmon eaters that have no idea what good salmon tastes like, but making it accessible at extremely low prices.

The cheap, cheap farm raised salmon is really like the McDonalds of fish. Industrial fish farmers have found a way to get salmon half way around the world and into grocery stores for unbelievably low prices, but its the same thing as McDonald's having found a way to sell a quarter pounder for $.99. It doesn't compare to a real hamburger.

Having said all that, I have no idea what kind of salmon these guys are selling, and its out of stock so it really doesn't matter.

Awww... I was hoping for LIVE Bulk Salmon. I wanted to watch the UPS guy struggling towards my door with a package that keeps trying to wiggle out of his hands.

You live in OH and pay $3.83 per pound of wild salmon filets. Man, I wish that it was that cheap in MD.

Now its $11.50 lb for "DEAD: Bulk Salmon". I'm glad its dead, I wouldn't want to pay $11.50 to get a live one, only to have to gut it myself 😛

Farmed actually, I can't stomach wild salmon.

Lucky for me that all fish tastes pretty much the same for me. Eating meat that is $11.50 a pound is pure luxery and not something I am willing to pay. Besides, once you get tarter sauce on it, it all tatstes the same 😀

But, hey, don't spread the hate just because someone people cannot tell the difference between a $25,000 dollar hot cocoa, or a glass of swiss miss. Personally, I am glad I can't tell the difference. More money in my pocket...
