DEAD: Barebones DELL Vostro Slim $69!!!

Page 3 - Seeking answers? Join the AnandTech community: where nearly half-a-million members share solutions and discuss the latest tech.
Ordered one for $69 with FREE overnight shipping! (Woot!)
Second one for $69 as well (ordered just as it died, but already had it in cart) with $29, 3 day shipping.

Here's hoping it all goes through!
Thanks SandEagle.

Cancelled ....

But, telephoned Dell with copy of order on screen, demanded to speak to a manager, and got $69 credit to something elsel I wanted to order.

Now I wish that I had added some options to original order and maybe I could have gotten more than a $69 credit.

Dell is Hell 🙂.

God they suck. Get your hopes up and they screw you.

They always cancel my orders too. They have not canceled this one yet but I am sure it will be any minute.

Most of their deals involve monitors. Their monitors must cost them almost nothing to make. You don't see any deals with free hard drive or free video card.

I'd be as excited to get something like this as anyone else, but it's beyond me why people get angry or disappointed when a company doesn't honor what's clearly a pricing mistake.

clearly??
Then why did not Dell catch this?
Does anyone want a job to just review Dell's change pricing before released to web?
Clearly Dell could do this review, it they wanted to.

And, in the age of the $100 laptops for every child, there is no inherent reason this Dell system cannot be sold at a profit for $69! It's mostly about volume. You have a huge initial cost. Then you pour sand into one end of a machine which produces computers without addtional labor. It's like my first digital wristwatch that cost $500, and which was later provide by Mobile Oil as a free credit card sign up offer. 🙂

Technology is on a collision course. We can produce things for near zero marginal labor cost. But, to the extent technolgy is successful, who will be employed to earn the dollars needed to buy what is produced? We are DOOMED as well as greedy.

iq100
GREEDY is good, but DOOMED is bad

I mean if they want to sell me these at this price fine, it is all about bulk buying. If they cancel my order and do not ship, that is fine too. I am not going to call and complain because it is not worth it and clearly a pricing mistake.

I highly doubt Dell can turn a turn if they shipped these at $69 a pop.

CPU - $15
Motherboard - $10
Ram - $5
Vista - $20
Warranty - $5
DVD Drive - $5
Hard Drive - $10
Case - $5
PSU $3
Box, manuals - $3
Shipping - $5

Total = $86 not including a bunch of other things. (labor, staff, customer service, and etc.)

I didn't try to get into this deal, turning a profit on it will be tough.

Then how does someone make money on a $100 laptop for every child?
And Dell can always get Obama to just write a check as part of his trillion dollar bailout program, run by his cronies at pretty high salaries. 🙂

We are doomed.

I remember seeing the issues with the $99 tv - nonetheless I got in on one of these for 109 I believe (E5200 and 250GB hard drive).

I paid with paypal - will the paypal payment be stuck on hold from my bank account until Dell cancels this (assuming they do)? Or will it just never be held/charged, and then cancelled?

Dude, I think the $100 laptop or PC for every child is Backed/Subsidized by the government, and charitable organizations. Not everyone can get a laptop at $100, otherwise you'll see it posted on the hot deals page. You'll need to qualify for it (under privileged).

It is a non-profit program meant to help those in need, BACKED by charity funding. It is not meant to turn a profit. Think of it like schools, free text books, calculators, and counseling. Schools lose money, they are not out there to make a profit.

Why do you need to end your posts with "we are doomed?" Just because Dell had a price mistake and not everyone benefited from it (perhaps some did and some didn't) doesn't make it the end of the world, lol.

Another big Dell price mistake, another group of cancellations, another thread of complaints.

It's the circle of life.

why does anyone shop at Dell?

half the time you order from them they cancel it due to their error

otherwise it takes 2-3 weeks to get your order (compare this with HP who ships your order the same day)

my experience is their comps run hot, are loud, and emit a chemical smell (I sold my dell mini 9 due to this issue which others have reported)

??

move along little troll. This is not a discussion about the pros and cons of dell versus hp.
this was indeed a hot deal(is they go thru)

Hi,

Has anyone been able to check order status? I keep getting "500 - Server Processing Error". I got the order acknowledgement email from Dell, but nothing further. No order confirmation or cancellation emails.

gard

Yea, me too. Nothing but the original generic email order response. Nothing further and my order does not show up in my account. Dell sucks rocks lately. I got in very early on the Pharos 117 cell phone and a couple days later, I get an email from Dell telling me my delivery date was pushed back. So, I sent Dell an email asking why and I got a generic email response, 'we received your email, blah blah blah, it was assigned to a Dell representative, blah blah blah, they will be getting in touch with you within 48 hours'. Of course, that was a week ago and absolutely nobody has gotten in touch with me.

I don't expect I will hear anything from Dell regarding this either.

Luck all,
George

Their monitors probably cost very little for the quality level because of their volume. AFAIK Dell sells more monitors than any other brand.

No. I am getting the same 500 error as above. I will call them today at lunch to ask why my order is not in my order history. As one poster stated, if you complain enough and to the right person (take it to the top), they will probably give you some sort of credit and let you know they are going to cancel it. This is better than waiting 2 weeks to find out they are going to cancel it.
