Ok excuse my ignorance but I am a newbie on the CDRW scene. Here's my question:

I got in on this deal...about $20 after PM, coupon and rebate.

1) Is there anyway to confirm that this is a Light-on. My model number is VBT401248A.
2) If it is indeed a lighton....Do i really need to do the firmware upgrade to get the "Light-On performance" or does that simply get me from 40x to 48x?

Hope that makes sense

thanks in advance

If you have the guts do what I did at Staples. I always had a huge argument about pricematching at our local store, so what I did was got one of there carts and loaded it up with aout $2000.00 worth of stuff then went over and tried to pricematch a Hard Drive which caused the usual big hassle I argued for a few minutes and then got my cart and shoved it into the register lane and told them to shove it. I then went to staples web site and filed a complaint stateing that they lost over $2000.00 of my business. The next morning the manager of the local store called, He had been contacted by someone up higher than him I assume. He apologized, he asked what I wanted him to do in order to regain my business, I replied just give me the pricematches that you advertise. I have had no problem pricematching since.

Its a good strategy..it borders on fraud...so be careful. I used to work at a store with cameras that will track you and assign an empoyee to have you followed.

Just keep in mind that it is a game. Play fair.

All Verbatims are to my knowledge Lite-ons, Which means you can upgrade it using Lite-on's firmware....Now to up the burning speed to 48X....you need to go to CD freaks website and read in the Lite-on forum about how to do that.

I got the Verbatim drive and a 100 pack of Phillips 40X CDRs today for $91.84 out of store, but there is $70 worth of rebates, and another $20 MIR that I might be able to use. My cashier was very nice, she 110% PMed Newegg's drive and took the $10 coupon. I am going to pick up another tomorrow for my other computer. BTW this was at the Westchester (Los Angeles) Staples. They had 4 left, and plenty of the CDRs.

Oh for the Newegg printout I did a screenshot into Photoshop, cropped away the IE toolbars, and did a little removal of all OEM references. But it didnt matter because I pulled out an unedited Newegg printout and she took that.

Thanks Sound....

Here's my next request...Can you steer me in the direction for "upgrading it using Lite-on's firmware". Not sure how that's done.

thanks in advance.

Update!!! I went to my Staples tonite and the price is now $89+ change!!

Mattlock2: Go to CD Freaks website and there is a sticky in the Lite-on forum about how to change the name of your Verbatim to a Lite-on so then you can use the factory (lite-on's) firmware upgrades.

You can also go to CDRInfo.com. The host up-to-date firmware downloads, and do some rather in-depth reviewing too.

Are you sure that was the Verbatim brand 40x drive that you saw and was the $89.99 price before the rebate is subtracted? If true then the drive would be $89.99 - $15 off $75 Staples coupon - $40 MIR = $34.99. Can anyone else confirm this new price? It's still $109.99 on their web site.

I went back today to do just that $15 off $75 and they were out of stock, but they did confirm that they had them for 89.99. I should have gone back last nite and gotten one!

Do you know if that was a clearance item priced just for that store or was that a new lower price for all staples stores? Also the next time you're in staples check to see if they have the CenDyne 40x CDRW for the same $89.99 price.

UPDATE : At least two people have comfirm that the price in the Staples stores on the 40x Verbatim has been lowered to $89.99, this price may not be available it all stores and the price is still $109.99 on-line. (if it still marked $109.99 ask they to do a price scan).

$89.94 - $40 MIR - $15 off $75 Staples printable email coupon = $34.94

For those in the Bayarea, Fry's has this retail for 69.99 with a 30 MIR for 39.99 + tax after rebate.

SKU # is 3384132.

I got the last one from my staples in the last day of the deal. The lady allowed me PM the OEM version of it sold on newegg.com (I am lucky) and use my $15 business reward. I have converted it to a 48x liteon. Now it is the same as my another 48x liteon (OC'ed from 40x). Now it burns CD-R using CAV mode but not Z-CLV mode. It also supports Mt. Rainier. Anyway, I keep a copy of my original verbatim firmware.

Where can I learn this whole "firmware" concept. I am having problems with my burner reading blank CDRs "the medium is not empty". Maybe I need to upgrade my firmware but dont have a clue how.
