Phantom: I looked on CompUSA's website as of 10pm last night and the San Jose and Santa Clara stores were both out of stock. The closest that it says is in stock is the one near SFO (off the 380 on El Camino), but I didn't feel like waking up at 8:30 to get there before 10.

Ah well... maybe they'll get some in later in the week. I plan to check the site now and then...

I think you have it wrong. People do want the Lite-On that ends with a B.

Actually there was one in stock when I checked yesterday (Saturday) afternoon around 2pm or so. But the CSR must have bought it because I mentioned to him that there's going to be a sale on this drive today. He seemed to be ignorant about this deal until I mentioned it to him.

Scored one at the Pleasanton store. There's still one left after I bought mine. But it might be gone by now.

just got back from my compusa (37th and 5th avenue) and the they were out. the manager said there are only 145 in stock in the entire country. he said that i should check back as his store is the second largest (behind honolulu) and they get 5 shipments in each day. he said this was a black ad that was not published in the national sales circulars. apparenly someone dropped the ball and didn't get the burners to them in time.

"IN STOCK", that was what CompUSA told me when I checked their 'real time' inventory.

Go there 15 mins later, the clerk told me, they got none. So much for the real time check.

He told me just order online.

In the Seattle area According to the manager of the South Center Store.
#1 There are none in Stock.
#2 There were not any in Stock At any Store in the area at Opening time this morning.

What kind of FRAUD is it When the store advertises an item, but does not stock it?
Not Bait & Switch because the don't try to get you to buy something else.
But there must be a NAME for it.

BTW The Store Managers only Suggestion Was for me to call the CrapUSA 1-800#

I don't think the inventory check on their website is real-time. I think they only update it once a day. When I did it a minute ago, here's what it says on the bottom:

"Pricing and availability information is up-to-date as of 7/21/2002 8:40:47 AM. "

Geez, you went all the way there? I wouldn't drive that far out of my way just to save $10, but I'm glad you managed to find one!

I think you misunderstood my post. Sorry if I was ambiguous, but my last sentence means the ones that start with an X are the ones that ppl don't want, and the ones that serial number starts with B are the same as the ones that have part numbers ending in B (the ones people do want). There's no way to read the part number from outside the box (as far as I know), so the serial number is the only way to tell if you're getting the B or the X.

I've been using a 12x10x32 VeloCD that I got two years ago, and I've been buying all these 32x TY's from the recent Fujifilm CD-R deals. So I thought it's about time to upgrade to a 40x CDRW to make use of those media. :)

I was on hold and then got disconnected at the San Jose store. I guess they shut off service right at 6:00pm :(

Hey guys...I'm on vacation right now, driving around the SE, so I decided to try the CompUSA in Raleigh, which CompUSA.com tonight states "Limited Quantities" for the TDK...

Unfortunately, they had none left (if they had any to begin with, I dunno :() But, just so you know, if anyone lives or was planning on going to Raleigh. For other NC residents, it also says the stores in Charlotte and Greensboro are out of stock.

Just a heads up!

I checked my local Compusa in Plano, TX and they were out. I went to Best Buy and they pricematched the $89.00 price. Best Buy also has a $50 MIR so its $39.00 + Tax after rebate. Picked up a pack of the free after MIR 100 pack Philips 40x CDR's too! Great deal!

I got this drive at the CompUSA at Perimeter, GA. They had one left after I left the store. The stores in Alpheretta and Roswell also had "some" in stock.

I got the B model and that's all they had in stock. I haven't installed the drive yet.

I am confused about the SafeDisc 2 protection, however - this drive defeats safedisc as a reader or a writer? I'm not sure I understand that.

Got one in the Encinitas, CA CUSA. A young woman was shopping next to me and almost got the Memorex and I casually mentioned the $50 TDK MIR. I saw her at checkout when an employee told her the rebate didn't exist and the ad was over. I got a manager for her who told her the rebate was real and even gave her $10 back (from $99 to $89). The girl was happy and the manager told me it was a "dark ad" that you had to ask for to get (they are tracking us Ferengi). :D

The package says Buffer "Underrun Protection/Full Multitasking Capability" - so it's a "smart burn" solution. My SERIAL NUMBER indicates it is a "B" or Lite-On. I do like the idea of making Safe2 disk back-up copies for my games.

Even though I have a woking 12X HP that hasn't failed me in 2 years (another "free after MIR" hot deal) - I guess I can upgrade for only $40. :) Thanks for the post, MysticMan1

Your's is a LiteOn (Serial number beginning in B is a Lite-on like mine). BTW, No CD burner actually burns at 40X. That is the "peak" speed at the outside of the CD.

The LiteOn can burn in "raw" mode which is necessary to copy a SafeDisk2 CD using Clone CD.

EDITED for accuracy.
