This is from a PCWorld.com review of the TDK 40x drive :
The drive we tested uses a Sanyo mechanism (TDK has a second drive on the market, designated by the underlying name 401248B, that uses a Lite-On drive mechanism).

This sounds like a beautiful deal...only if someone can confirm that the Lite-On is the one with the "B" on the box or says Smart-Burn on the fromt of the box.

BTW, I have found that the online store inventory check is not accurate at all...even if it says "in-stock" it can be out of stock...

They are also selling it on-line but for "$50" After rebate, $10 more than in the store with the print out ad.

I bought one of these drives at Circuit City on Saturday. The shelf price said 159.99 but it scanned as 119.99 at the register. I will be going back with the ad so I can get my 110% refund ;)
BTW, the model I got has the B in the part number so it is a Lite On.

Looks like the rebate goes to TDK at Young America. As long as there is no second rebate, this is a better deal than the I/O Magic one at OD.

First there were 2, now there's 1. Just grabbed one at CompUsa (Hauppauge NY). Smart-Burn or Burn-Proof was no-where to be seen on the box, just "BUFFER Underrun Protection". Box also says Poster and Video included! That's not to be - just instruction/installation manuals. Now I wasn't sure whether to buy it or not. Part of the serial# read "B401248A......", so going by that, I bought it. Opened it up, and the lettering on the drive said "AI-CDRW401248B" - manufactured March 2002. So I guess it's a Lite-On.

Well, you can overclock the Lite-On to 48X, but chances are you'll lose the bundled software since they are keyed to the TDK's firmware.

You should check to see if you can get $39.99 price without the ad print out, as long as you mention the ad I would think that they would be willing to give you the ad price.

When I brought my drive to the register, I showed him the "In-Store" printed ad. He then said I was supposed to print out (as well) the page that appears when you click on the link that's shown in the ad (basically the full description of the drive - price, etc.). I told him there was no mention of this, that "only" a printout of the "In-Store" ad was mentioned. Then asked him the price of the drive, to which he said $99.99 (to myself - I said what?). He then took $10 off for the printed ad, then said there's a $50 mail-in rebate available on their site. I don't think too many people will walk out the door paying $39.99 + tax. So my total was:
$89.99 ($99.99 - $10 in-store ad) + tax (8.5% - NY) = $97.64 - $50rebate = $47.64

It appears to be a TDK rebate, but with CompUsa's name stamped on it (in a few spots). It gets mailed to Young America, MN.

Yes! Circuit City also has a $50 rebate on the TDK 40x drive, their current price is $119.99 before the rebate. Of couse the Question is will they price match the lower CompUSA $89.99 in-store ad price or only the non ad $99.99 price.

Just got in on this deal from the Towson, MD store. Kind of a funny story (to me anyway). I go in looking for the 40x drive as well as the pci ATI radeon in case they have any left. At first I didn't see either. Then I looked a little harder and found the 40x drive, but noted the "A" in the UPC on the outside of the box (rather than B or X), and I didn't see any indications of the "sale", so I thought I'd peruse the "wall o' rebates" to see if maybe the rebate was up there. Checked it out for about 5 minutes...found the $20 rebate for the radeon AGP so I grabbed a couple just in case. One of the cashiers gets my attention, telling me that he's "letting me know" that all the rebates expired yesterday. I asked him where the new rebates were...he told me there weren't any (well why don't you take a minute to take down the rebates then? I guess they were there for show or for the straggler's that "forgot"...I still didnt see any reason for them to be on the wall still). He mentioned that they currently had a "dark" sale or "black" sale, something like that -- an unadvertised sale on select items (me on the outside: "ok" me on the inside: "muhahaha" with the print out in my pocket). The guy seemed like he was trying to help me out, little did he know about my ace in the hole -- anandtech :) so I walked over to check out the burner again -- asked one of the reps (actually, he was the third one to bug me, they must really need the commissions nowadays). He matched up the SKU to the same 40x I had seen. Someone had been nice enough to leave the obviously returned one on the shelf and snuck the "new" one onto a higher shelf. Me: "yoink" as I grabbed the one from higher :) I walked up to pay...the same cashier from before waved me over. I asked to double check with my printout (me: "BOO-YA, how about that sale :) ") He looked at it for a bit...then he went to check it out on the computer there (some box they had setup with AOL high-speed or something). I had to point him to the exact URL (printed at the bottom of the page). Then he has to go talk to the manager...comes back to tell me the rebate is printing out in the back of the store. Comes back with the rebate, charges me the 89.99, I walk out happy (although I had planned on getting an extra one for a friend...I wasn't gonna buy the returned one tho). On top of that I just opened it up -- it's the B version ... 48x here I come :)

I went to the Santa Clara, CA store this morning at about 10:05, and they had none in stock. It seems like they never had any to begin with! This store never seems to have anything they advertise in stock that's actually a GOOD deal.

Forgot this one...if you look at the serial number at the bottom of the box and it starts with a B, it's the part number that ends with a B. I've seen some at Fry's that started with an X too, I guess those may be ones ppl don't want.
