After doing some quick looking, am I offbase by thinking 199 still may not be a bad price for someone with a 939 mobo who just wants to get a bit more life out of their existing system?

IIRC, only the 4400+ and 4800+ had 1MB L2 cache per core; the 4200+ and 4600+ were the same clock speeds respectively but with half the cache.

My bad, I was just going off what it said at the product page:
Athlon 64 X2 4200+, 1MB Cache, 2000MHz FSB, Socket 939, Dual-Core Processor with Fan.

Of course later it says:
Features:

L1 Cache Size - 128 KB per core
L2 Cache Size - 512 KB per core
Processor Speed - 2.0 GHz
Processor Socket - Socket 939
Product Line Series Model - 2.0 GHz Athlon-64 X2 3800+ Dual-Core Processor - PIB

Even farther down it says:

CPU type AMD Athlon? 64 FX
CPU clock speed 2.20GHz
Details
Compatibility Details Processor Speed 64 4200+ / 2.20GHz

That product page is totally jacked up. It claims this CPU is an A64 4200+ with 1MB cache and/or 512k cache, running 2.0GHz and/or 2.2GHz, is a 3800+ and is an Athon 64 FX.

ecost is now selling the processor that I got for $149 last week for $399 - a guy could get whiplash with price changes like that.

I just got mine. It's a retail Athlon 64 X2 4200. The retail box was in good condition but the inner green styroform packing was completely disintegrated. Luckily, the processor and fan looked undamaged. The processor I got was a LDBHE 06055PDW. Overall, I'm happy with it.:)

Thanks to the OP -- it's one of the few times I got in on a good deal before it went out of stock. :)

Have exactly the same experience as stormrider so far - product arrived as advertised with retail packaging - but again with the internal packing in shreds - the heat sink might have gotten bounced around a bit as it was loose inside the packing - but the processor itself seemed to be well contained and has no bent pins. Will be installing tomorrow.
