Wow! I really want to buy this chip:) I already have the 146 and 148 Operton chips that will do 3.0 and 2.95 ghz. Do you think it would be worth it to upgrade, if you could call it that, to this chip. The only advanage is being able to run my ram at 2-2-2-5 or 1.5-2-2-5. Does anyone know if the ram timmings make the much difference for 2.5-4-3-5.

Shoud I buy this chip and sell one of my opertons? The operton chips run very smooth and I really hate to sell one, but the thought of getting 3.2 is getting the best of me.

Anyone spare some performance advice? Currently using a P4 2.4C @ 3.0Ghz , is this gonna give a pretty good jump? I'll need to get a mobo but any thoughts are appreciated.

this will wipe the floor with a 3.0 p4. I received mine, just waiting to put it in, hoping for 3.0 on stock volts, and I will do a happy dance. Last chip I'm buying until quad core comes out and is worth buying.

dude, this will smother that p4 as if it was nothing.

anyways, i hit 3 gighz stable after approx 10 hours of prime95 (still running):

If you notice on the bottom right of the screenshot, you'll see it's running under load @ 51C. I was playing BF2 while prime was running. It hit 53C absolute top. My room is a tad above room temperature, and I use a Thermalirght Ultra-120 HSF.

Can this chip be overclocked using Corsair Value RAM?

Even if I can't I may still buy one. I'm currently running a a64 3500+ and figure this should be a nice boost until I upgrade my motherboard down the road.

1gig corsair Value
k8n neo2 Plat.
a64 3500+ venice

Since it has unlocked multipliers, you don't have to overclock the RAM. I would think that just about any ram that runs stable at 200MHz would do fine.

When reading through the newegg reviews on the Freezer 64 hsf, I came across a suggestion to buy this Sunbeam HSF instead. The review claimed they are the same, and they do appear to be by the photo. I've not used the heatsink (haven't even jumped on this deal yet), but passing along options for the oem version.

The new retail deal does seem very good to me. I might not be able to hold out any longer.

You can get the Freezer 64 at provantage.com for less.

Same as an Ebay price...shipping kills the deal at provantage

just pop it in, make sure you have the thermal paste on it and just boot it up...thats it...you can go to the bios screen on bootup and set it to factory defaults and go from there

That's all I did. Received it yesterday along with my Thermaltake Big Typhoon and that combination is running nice and cool at 25C idle and 31c load. Nice and cool.

Im gonna go ahead and get it, might get two, one for me and might build my parents a new computer (there still running a 723 MHZ Pentium 3).

Never overclocked a CPU before, guess I will have to give it a try.

Found a open box Big Typhoon for around $30 shipped. Good deal?

My problem is the Intel promo w/the 6300 C2D, motherboar & Vista bundle is near.
I don't know whether to invest the $'s in that & have to deal w/selling (or parting) my current pc since i'd need DDR2 & PCI-e or going w/the FX55, new motherboard & using my current ram & video.
Comments? Suggestions?

I got mine new from Newegg for $40 and can't believe how quiet it is. No sound difference from low to high fan speed. My case is so silent now I can only barely hear my Zalman VF900 when it's going full speed. The typhoon was pretty easy to install too and I'm getting great temps.

If I'm not interested really in O/Cing this processor, and I don't really need SLI, what motherboard is the best performance /price out there?

This was talked about earlier in the thread and someone reccomended the DFI Lan Party which was only $104 on Newegg. I came close to buying it but when I reaserched more realized that they want 500 Watt PSU as a minimum. I only have an Antec 430W so didn't move on it. The DFI supposedly OC's great too. Also read that it can be picky about ram.

I've been happy with my Asus A8N5X. No problems running a San Diego at 2.8 GHz, and 2GB of G. Skill PC 3200 at 2-3-2 latencies. No firewire, if that matters. A8N5X link

heh, i got my abit K8N for ~$50 after $20 rebate. It doesn't have all the options, but it has everything I needed. It oc'ed my older a64 to 2.5 fine. The current FX55 is doing fine @ 3 gighz w/ 1.55 set vcore (actual 1.55. it always undervolts by 0.01 or 0.02).

Don't worry about the DFI 500 watt requirement. It is all theoretical and takes into account a blowtorch VGA/EVGA.
If your video setup requires twin Arctic DryICE coolers, then don't go with 430 watts on the DFI. :D:D:D Otherwise, you're probably good to go.

Just got mine today. Will be installing it first thing tomorrow after work.
This is replacing my 3700+ San Diego that would not go over 2.5 gighz. Pissed me off; i even got a thermalright120 to hit try to hit around 2.8, but for no matter what I did, it will not do anything over 2.5 (prime will fail @ a hair above 2.5, but stable all day @ 2.5). I'll probably get a 10 fps boost lol. Not sure if it's worth it. I know my 120 HSF is good enough.
Dan the man,
I've been looking all over for the XP-120 to go with this deal and can not find one for less than highway robbery.
Please let me know where you got yours?
TIA:D:D:D
Dan,
Thanks for the input...
I am going with the CNPS9500.
As soon as I clicked the buy button on the egg, I found that the 9500 is going to be replaced by the CPNS9700. - 120mm fan equivalent. :D:D:D

I got the Thermalright Ultra-120, not the xp-120. It's HUGE and BARELY fits in my case.
I got mine from where I always get my HSF's --> SVC.com. They don't have either in stock :(. you can try pctoys or coolerguys. I've had no problems with those sites in the past.

EDIT:
I hit 3 gighz easy. I was able to hit 3.2, but it was unstable in prime. I didn't want to put my Vcore over 1.55V. Currently priming away @ 3 gighz.

Interesting, you should run some other benchmarks and tell us what you get!

Benchmarks These benchies tell it all. this fx is the fastest single core but the dual cores wipe it out in multithread apps, If the AMD 64 X2 4800 was $200 that would be the better deal but its still at $250 This Fx chip is all you need if your a hardcore Gamer but that I am not.
